Thanks for all the post! Had the chance to test both out last night. I love both of them.

I'm still undecided.. lol I'm leaning more towards the CRD as of right now.

I drive about 25miles around trip to work every day and I take 50+ mile trips weekly and about 5-10 300+ miles trips a year. I also have a 17 ft boat that I tow, but I'm fairly sure both could handle that.

Thanks for the clarification on the diesel fueling thing.

I knew that a cold engine won't burn off condensation, either in the combustion chamber or in the crankcase and that's why short trips are not good, but I didn't know diesels had any provisions to control air intake (it, a throttle body or "butterfly"). I knew diesels had FCV (flow control valves), but thought those were used to shut air off to the engine at shutdown and as a safety device to stop a run away motor.

Guess I need to update my diesel knowledge.

Based on the above....I think you would get more benefit from the diesel...especially with the towing.

I have to admit though that this is coming from someone who wouldn't buy anything but a diesel. The last 4 vehicles I have owned have been diesels and I have no plans to switch back to gas anytime soon

really good read! I wish the WK was available with the 7 speed MB transmission mentioned in the PDF.

Yeah...I just finished reading the PDF. Very interesting stuff. I'm betting the CRD engine will run for years after the rest of the vehicle is a rusting pile around it. LOL!

Downsides to the CRD would be oil changes cost a little more, tougher to get service from most dealers because they don't understand the new diesels...but the pros far outweigh the cons IMO. Lots of torque, I average 25 mpg over the last 14k miles, highway driving pleasure (no downshifting needed), towing ability, etc.
X 2

Another factor in this is that it seems that the CRDs depreciate a lot less than the other engines. If I had to do it all over again, I would most definitely get the CRD. It's an interesting option.

I chose the CRD mostly because it gets better mileage and we drive about 24,000 miles per year. We needed the towing capacity for our camper so the only engines I considered were the hemi and CRD.

During my test drives, the engines seemed to have about the same acceleration up to about 40 MPH. I rarely drive over 65 MPH so that's not a big deal. If you drive in the mountains, it's kind of nice to stay in 5th gear even on long grades at high elevations where most gasses are dropping a gear or two to stay at the legal limit.

From what I've gathered, there is nothing different between the gas and diesel vehicles past the transmission. Transfer case, differentials, etc are the same.

There might be a different ratio, but I believe everything else is the same.

Yes, provided the vehicle is equipped with the quadra-drive II system. Optional on Laredo and Limited and standard on Overland IIRC. If it has it, you should have an emblem for Quadra Drive II on the shifter bezel. chadhargis is correct and the diesel engine is merely another option.

On the resale value, it is really excellent news. I am also optimistic on comparing resale values in a year or two. The CRD is out of production, it's a Mercedes engine, etc.

read this thread and find it funny that only a few Hemi guys fend for their hemis, Yet the CRD groupies jumped right on this thread to voice thier opinion.

ME. i owe a CRD, infact the only reason i have a jeep is because it can do everything a hemi can and get better mpg. Yes their are some quirks, Oil changes, maybe ned to add a racor/provent to help the engine out, But overall its a better deal.

Oh and my mother who never liked those "smoky, stinky diesels", ABSOLUTELY LOVES my CRD. She has helped me rack up 10k+ in just over 2 months.

IMO get the CRD, don;t forget to fill up with diesel, Make sure EVERYONE in the family knows and be happy with your new ride.

Also, make sure it's ULTRA low sulfer diesel, and not just low sulfer diesel. I pulled up to a station I normally don't frequent, and began filling up. Got 6 gallons in her before I noticed the sticker "Not for use in 2007 or newer vehicles - Low Sulfer Diesel 500ppm"

ACK!!! At that point I had enough fuel to drive to my normal filling station and put the good stuff in.

I wanted all the bells and whistles, but at the end of the day, all I REALLY wanted was the CRD motor and the tow package. I got the Laredo 2wd and it's NICE. Never seen an Overland or Limited, so I don't know what I'm missing.
