Cooling system questions.

Hello, I am Scott. I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee Overland. Im living in southern New Mexico and it gets pretty warm here. I apologize in advance if I am posting in the wrong place. I am experiencing an odd issue with the coolant system and have a couple questions. First off, where should the temp gauge sit. Mine sits one notch to the left of the half way point. All other cars I have driven usually sit about a quarter of the way. Is that normal?

My second situation is as follows. Coolant will not go from the excess tank to the radiator. I found this out the expensive way. After getting the engine fixed it still will not drain into the radiator. The hose is not clogged. If I pull it off of the nipple that leads into the radiator it will flow.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Just below half way is what most read. It might go past half if you're going up a big hill in the Summer.

Have you checked the radiator cap? If the gasket is leaking, it wouldn't get a seal to create the vacuum to draw the coolant back to the radiator.

Hey thank you for your reply! I figured I would change the radiator cap out just for good measure but the dealership told me they do not sell just the cap. This seems silly to me but maybe the guy did not know what he was talking about. If that is the case which ones work the best?

They don't sell just the cap? haha! Any auto parts store should be able to sell you a Stant or Gates replacement cap. Just make sure it's an 18 PSI cap like the original. They are cheap, probably $5.

Hah, won't sell just the cap? Whatever...

I replaced mine a couple years back. Found that when straining the system (long grades, heavy towing) it would push a little coolant out the gasket. New cap fixed it.

Agreed on the gauge location too. Stock thermostat is 203 and will read just a bit below halfway. Halfway on the gauge is about 215 as I recall.

Thank you so much, you guys are very helpful. I picked up a new cap when I was picking up my battery. Fingers crossed that is what the problem is.

Hearing about the thermostat is comforting. Thank you very much everyone

first off, your dealership parts guy is a complete retard. part number for OEM rad cap is 4596198

If he was a real parts guy he would have also informed you that due to issues with leaks, the cap has been upgraded. New style has a black plastic top to the cap.

see image here of what new redesigned OEM cap looks like.

What year and/or engines are the upgraded caps for? The CRD isn't listed.

The CRD is likely a different cap anyway since the overflow bottle is pressurized and the cap is there, rather than on the rad like all the other models.

That link shows what it's for:

Mopar factory replacement Radiator Cap for the following Jeep and engine combinations.

2003-2004 WJ Grand Cherokee with 4.7L
2005-2010 WK Grand Cherokee with 3.7L, 4.7L, 5.7L or 6.1L
2011 WK Grand Cherokee with 3.6L or 5.7L
2006-2010 XK Commander with 3.7L, 4.7L or 5.7L
2008-2011 JK Wrangler with 3.8L
2012-2013 JK Wrangler with 3.6L
2002-2007 KJ Liberty with 3.7L
2008-2012 KK Liberty with 3.7L
2008-2013 MK Compass & Patriot with 2.0L or 2.4L

Ah, I didn't realize the cap is on the radiator for the gas models. Seems like most cars built since the 2000's had them on the overflow tank though.

Doesn't make much sense to me why the CRD would have it on the overflow tank since the cooling system is the same as the Hemi otherwise. I'm sure the dealer would really screw a CRD owner on a new radiator since it's 'special'.

In cars it makes more sense as the rad is usually buried and you wouldn't be able to get at the cap. That said...my 4.7 Dakota had a rad cap in the upper hose, not the rad. 21psi at that!
