Commander off road at Hollister, CA

Took my stock Commander Limited to Hollister CA, for some playing at the obstacle course and driving the trails. Had a great time. Saw a Suzuki Samurai tip over in the "mud hole" and get towed out on its side, before being uprighted by about 10 people.

The Commander did fine, getting one wheel off in about three places, and occasionally rubbing skid plates on the larger bumps. No problem climbing the moderate trails with the Stock Forteras and Quadra Drive II, but it would have been nice to have at least AT's to even consider the mud hole. Saw lots of vehicles get stuck in it, even some lightly modded ones. Plenty of Wranglers running around Hollister, and doing great on the steepest hills. And a bunch of older Grand Cherokees also.

That Commander looks tons better in this element. I've only seen a couple of them on the streets. Thanks for the pics.

the picture that you have labeled "Grand Cherokee in the mud hole" is not a grand cherokee, that would be a cherokee

Nice! I'd love to take `Midnight` (that what my wife named the Commander) up there too ...

Definitely a lift and AT's would've made your Commander mud worthy???

I'll see if I can get into some `trouble` with my Commander on the way to the Sequoias tomorrow.

Thanks for the multiple clarifications about my erroneous labeling of the Cherokee. I ask for forgiveness.

I still have a lot to learn, but also have learned a lot in the 6 months since I purchased my XK. I would not knowingly make that mistake today.

Just finished the RR 2.25 inch lift, and am working hard to find a wheel solution, so I can fit some 265/70R 17 AT's, hopefully in advance of my Big Bear off road trip on April 23rd. Considering Fred Goeske spacers to be able to obtain the steering knuckle clearance...

My 2 year old affectionately refers to our Commander as "Blue Car." He absolutely loves the Jeep, and protests when he has to sit in the Cayenne. I think he likes the view from the second row, since it is elevated, and of course, the midnight color. Or maybe he knows what a true offroad vehicle is...

Its scary to see pics of an XJ and a commander on the same page, they are practically identical. I was next to a commander on the way to work and it looked not much bigger than an XJ.

I read somewhere, but I did not verify, that the 4Runner and Commander share surprisingly similar dimensions. I do think a Cherokee is quite a bit smaller though. But the Commander is a nice, manageable size.

Coming from a 2001 Chevy Tahoe, I don't feel the Commander is a full size. But I do think it is larger than a Cherokee - look how the poor guy is shoehorned in there.

And it's much easier and fun to drive than my Tahoe. Well, I did put a Whipple Supercharger in the Tahoe, so it was fun to drive too...

The Commander has a superb turning radius, and is very easy to handle. My wife has no problem driving it, even with the lift, and she didn't like the Tahoe at all, because of the size. The Commander is also smoother and more comfortable. Less jouncy, even with the lift.

**Here are some new pictures with the new RR lift kit and larger tires from a Big Bear Off Road trip, in a separate thread. I was stock height and Fortera's at Hollister.

i just find it funny. In the pic of the Suzuki on its side, theres two jeeps parked above him. Guess it proves jeep owners are better.

Get this. It was actually a friend of the Suzuki owner's that dumped the Samarai. How crazy is that. The owner didn't look like he cared much.

The XJ is a BIT smaller than a commander.

Much closer in size to a liberty.
