Hey all, a friend recommended I check the forums for help with an odd problem I’m having. I have a 2010 Grand Cherokee with about 61k miles on it. Over the last year I’ve had some repairs done: rear diff replaced, rear axel hubs replaced, front control arms and front struts/mounts replaced, rear sway bar links replaced. Two different shops worked on these issues due to location convenience. The car is running well but there is a strange clanging/rattling sound coming from under the car when I drive over bumpy roads, roads with a lot of small potholes. It sounds like a tin can banging around or just metal hitting against metal whenever driving on a slightly rough road, best way I can describe it. On the freeway it sounds fine but the minute you get on a bumpy road the clanging starts up and is noticeably loud. I took the car back to the shop that replaced the sway bar links because they thought that repair might have caused the sound. A mechanic spent a day with it and could not determine where the sound was coming from, but thinks it could be something loose that only rattles over bumps when parts are separating. I’m taking it back to them after Thanksgiving so they can have two of their guys try and find it but wanted to see if anyone here might know what this sound could be. I’ve also checked the spare to make sure nothing was loose there, and it makes the same sound when driven without the spare attached. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
I would bet that the brake anti rattle clips are going out. I have to replace mine every time I replace the brakes and then usually once about half way through the brake life. That noise is irritating.
I will definitely add that to the list of things to check when I take it back in. If you think of anything else it could be please let me know and I'll have them check. Thanks so much!
I had a rattling clanking sound coming from the front of my 06 and everything was tight. I was scratching my head over this for a while.
Turned out to be a larger rock caught up in the front subframe that I found while giving it a cleaning with the air compressor.
Interesting. How did you find out that's what it was? Thanks for the input, I'm putting together a list of potential issues for the mechanics to check out.
Since you are describing this as a 'tin' noise, check the heat shields for the exhaust. If the '10 is like the '05, they are held on by studs that rust out. On mine they rusted out in locations hidden by the exhaust itself, and I had a very annoying rattle under some throttle conditions (especially accelerating going up hills). I didn't find the issue until I was doing work on the transfer case. I had to use fender washers and speed clips to reattach them until I feel like a more permanent fix.
i second the heat shields. Similar issue on my 2005 a couple of years ago. I had one removed and another fixed with fender washers. Noise was a rattling tin can.
My guess would be the metal skid plate like BC-X described. Especially since you said the control arms were replaced.
I have a stripped out bolt in my skid plate because some gorilla with an impact tightened it up (during previous ownership). Now one corner is loose. Very possible you may have something similar.
I found another spot where my heat shield was loose while replacing the exhaust, so I took some pics to show what I was talking about earlier in the thread. The dissimilar metals in the shield and fastener, combined with salt water that acts as a catalyst, makes the shield rot perfectly around the fastener. This has happened in three spots so far on my Jeep, and others aren't far behind. The 'quick' fix is a larger fender washer, and usually a new speed nut. A better fix would be using similar metals, or avoiding salt, but...
For this one I was able to reuse the speed-nut, although the stud wasn't in great shape. I think the stud mounts from inside the cabin, and I don't really feel like dealing with it to replace it. I sprayed undercoating before and after the fix to keep this protected for the time being, and hit all of the other fasteners with coating as well (yeah, I know the heat from the exhaust will be an issue). In hindsight, if I had high-temp paint it would have been a better choice.
Check inbetween the metal fuel tank cover and the fuel tank. i had a stone in ours and would rattle on bad roads but nothing or little on smooth. i dropped the steel plate and found it.
If you still haven't found it, check the exhaust hangers. Not all engine/exhaust variants use the same hangers and I found one on my SRT that was banging into the Corsa pipes. Cut it off and, "voila!"
Had a similar issue when only sounded during bad roads. No sounds on smooth roads. Turned out to be rubber bushings got worn out. I replaced them and all sounds disappeared. The bushings "looked" good at the time to the eye, but I bought new ones and replaced my self and sounds went away. Here are some picts. They were from the front end. Would always drive on bumps on purpose to isolate were clanking was coming from until I got pulled over cause drove on bumpy shoulder once lol.
