To change the tranny fluid or not?

As some will know from my many posts on the N23 shocker, I have an O6 Overland CRD with 55k mi on the clock. The very occasional light thud when accelerating but nothing I am worried about in the box. Should I change the tranny fluid for preventative maintenance, or just leave it in there. How many here have changed it?

I like to change tranny fluid between 50 and 60k, it's a good interval IMO.

Are you asking if you should change it now or wait 5K miles or just wait period?

I wouldn't go past 60K miles if I were going to service it. It's not going to explode or anything it's just a good time to do it.

I was going to change it now as I fear waiting much longer may do more harm than good. It has not been changed before.

How does the fluid look? Any burnt smell to it? If it's dark and smells burnt, then you should be really concerned!

I have no idea how it looks tbh. How can i check on a sealed unit? I am aware there is a dipstick point somewhere around thr engine. As I said, i have had no probs with the tranny (touchwood)

It's not sealed, it just doesn't have a dipstick. I bought one online to check the level.

I change mine every 30,000 miles which means a complete flush of the fluid not only the 8 quarts in the pan.

Brilliant stuff. I suppose the question is now threefold; a) Leave the fluid in there; b) do it myself -unlikely tbh- or c) trust the only tranny shop for miles to take the time to follow the temp regulated steps to get the fluid level right. mmm!

Just to clarify, he's got the W5a580 transmission, so it's not 8qts in the pan. Service is 4-6qts and an "overhaul" is 9.5-10qts.

If this helps ease your mind, I changed my fluid and filter at 100k and the fluid looked fine. I don't think it had been done before as I bought it at 60k with no service records.

If you are to do it yourself, I will say that this was the easiest tranmission to change fluid that I've ever worked on! Using the chart for fluid level is not too hard either.
