Broken door handle from ice storm

Tried to open drivers door when the jeep had about 1/2 inch of ice on it. Heard a pop and the handle pulled out normally, but the door did not open. Now the door will not open from the inside or the outside. Anyone have any suggestions to get the door open. I hate to take it to the stealership.

I would say take the door panel off but you need the door open for that. Is it frozen shut maybe?

X2.

Pull the door panel, and confirm all of the linkage is properly connected to the handle/lock cylinder still. Dealer is going to charge you ~$90/hr, so try this yourself first. Might be something simple.

I would do this, if I could get the door open so I could take the door panel off. Anyone else with any suggestions.

There is probably ice freezing the weatherstripping to the door??? Try to get in from another door. and warm it up.. If you still cant open it the linkage may have disconnected (plastic link) or broke. Good luck..

Even pulling the handle from the inside, and pushing, does nothing?

The linkage is broken. When I pull either handle there is no resistance. Definitely not frozen shut. I drove it around for about 3 hours. Had to get in and out from the passenger door. What a pain in the a$$.

Any tension when you turn the key in the lock?

Did not try that, but I did hit the lock unlock buttons on the door panel and fob several times, with no luck. It locks and unlocks fine. Just no tension when you pull either handle to open the door.

Sounds like you've disconnected the linkage that runs to the pull handle. I'm rattling my head to think of any other way to open it without damaging other parts.

Do you have a decent locksmith in your area? Or maybe a mechanic who has dealt with this before?

Talked to a friend that does body work. He said he can sometimes remove a door panel with the door closed. We are gonna give that a shot in the A.M. If that fails. I will have to support the local stealership.

Is there no way to get to the door linkage by removing the window switch bezel? I would think by removing that bezel it would give you enough room to at least slide a hand back there to reconnect it, or at least see what rod/linkage is causing the issue.

It's worth a shot to remove AS MUCH as OP can, and trying to see inside of the door to see what's broken.

Good idea Anon

Check out this video I found (just posted in DIY area too) - its for switching out the broken interior door handles, however it does show how to get to the linkage and take the door panel off and see if its broken

Nice video Bones.

OP, you might have to unbolt the driver's seat and try to push it towards the back of the vehicle to give yourself more room to work. That's what i've done on other cars/trucks.
