Anyone with an 05 & 545RFE

I'm pretty sure with the 2006-up and 545 , when you use the auto stick , the first click left (downshift ) from D indicates 5 on the display .My 05 however indicates 4th gear .The owners manual indicates that this is the way it was supposed to operate but i was just wondering if everyone elses 05's did the same ?

I've got an '05 with that transmission (Rocky Mountain Edition), and I'm pretty sure mine goes straight to 4th gear on the first left click with the shifter. But I'll check that when I get in the car this afternoon. Seems like our '06 Commander does the same thing as well.

Fifth gear is overdrive, which you're disabling when you make your first manual shift (to 4). D is 5.

Yes , but when you make the first manual shift in your 06 , you should be in 5th gear, not 4th like the 05's .At least all the 06's and up i remember test driving were like that .

I'll check my 06 XK when I get off work. That does seem odd, as dropping to 5th would be pointless...

5th Is overdrive with the tc not locked up.

exactly , and i believe it also disables mds if you have it .I was just wondering if it ever came out in the 05 model year .

Both 4th (.75:1) and 5th (.67:1) are overdrive gears on the 545RFE transmission. The 05's, 06's, and I believe 07's do not show "5" when backshifting. They only show "4". Walt, or someone with an 07 or 08 may be able to verify what year the "5" started showing up. I thought I'd be able to get it with one of the tuners like I did with my LX, but it still doesn't work on the WK. The shift lever must be in "D" for the MDS to work.

06 tap once to left puts me in 4, tap to right again puts me back in D.

I know for sure the 07 registered 5 , because i never test drove an 08 , but i was pretty sure the 06 did as well , ooorr maybe i'm just loosing it all together . lol .in 06 they supposedly changed the transmission to allow for better shifting , but i haven't been able to find what they did to acomplish that .As well in my reserch i found that the up-shift and down-shift pump pressures are different/higher for the hemi as opposed to the 3.7(liberty)/4.7's which i find odd because from the research i've done ,the 545 is basicly a hydraulicly operated trans up to 3rd gear .I'm just looking at tuning/valve body options to make the trans on my hemi a little better suited for me .the superchips helps , but still not everything it could be IMO .

Yzjwk, I hear you on the "loosing it". From time to time I have the same problem. Just hope it never becomes permanent. On the "better shifting", if they did it, I'd like to know what the earlier ones are like. Stock, my 06 was absolutely terrible. I added the Sonnax Line Pressure Booster and the tuner, and that helped somewhat. Then I just recently started tinkering with the SC ATT App. and improved it some more. It's almost too sensitive now, but I noticed on a short trip yesterday it still can't figure out what to do when go WOT at about 60 mph. Big hesitation that's always been there is still there. Other than that I am now fairly happy. It is, however, nothing like the NAG1 in my Hemi LX. It is a true autostick with instant response at any throttle setting, plus it'll take your head off on the WOT upshifts yet is very smooth at light throttle. Wish the 545RFE was half as good.
