Make sure you get a printout of the alignment. There are good "techs" all over the place, its just a matter of finding them. All places (dealers, chains, private shops, etc) have good/bad techs.

I finally got over to a Meineke shop today and dropped it off for an alignment. A half an hour later I got a call from them saying that my driver's side lower ball joint needs to be replaced. He said there's too much play in it and the alignment won't take. Quoted me like $450 to fix it and align. I said no thanks and went and picked up my WK. I don't know much about alignment...if my lower ball joint needs to be replaced, is what he said true? Or should I take it to another shop?

I saw good 'ol Budasac's post here on how to check if the lower ball joint needs to be replaced. I'm going to try and do that this weekend to verify. My buddy said he'd help me out replacing the ball joint, so I think we're gonna try and tackle it ourselves.

Is there any brand I should go for? Is there anything else I should be replacing along with the ball joint?

I would replace both sides and you may want to replace the tie rod ends as well.....check out rockauto.com

The lower ball joint is easy to replace. I got mine from summit racing, made by Moog. I would suggest checking all the bushings in the lower control arm also. If any are bad, just replace the entire control arm. It will come with new bushings and ball joint already installed

Well, after the Jeep dealership telling me I don't need an alignment, a Meineke shop telling me I need a new ball joint or the alignment won't hold, and two local shops telling me they can't align it because of the lift, my local Firestone shop finally came through for me. Here's the printout from the alignment if anyone is interested

I hope you bought the lifetime package as you will need alignments done every few months for the next 2 years as the lift settles(and it will settle throwing camber and toe off). It's also a good thing to have the alignment checked(and corrected) at least once a year but every 6 months is better.

I have there lifetime policy and over the last 6 years it's been on the alignment rack over 30 times, granted only had to actually adjust it maybe 3-4 times but checking is piece of mind when spending $1000+ on tires.Guess it doesn't help that I work there also so I get paid to check it.

Awesome advice, I never considered that it should be checked with settling of the lift. Thanks for the input.

no I didn't and I started kicking myself as soon as I walked out. I will definitely be going back there though, and I will definitely get the lifetime.

I had OME installed on my 09. The shop that did it uses the local Firestone for alignment. After Firestone did the alignment I went to them and told them that I want the lifetime offer. They changed the invoice right there on the spot and I had it.

By the way, did Firestone have to replace the ball joint?

No, I had two friends check it separately and tell me it's fine, so I didn't have them replace it. Thanks for the info maybe I'll go back in there tomorrow and ask for it
