5W-30 or 5W-40 for my '08 WK CRD?

I'm going to be changing the oil soon on my '08 WK CRD and the owner's manual says to use 5W-30, but I've read one post where it says to now use 5W-40. Which do you think is best?

You live in Minnesota... it doesn't get "desert" hot there so I would use the 5w30. The 40 weight is too thick and will rob you of MPG

Please do a search for CRD oil changes on this forum. Make sure the oil meets the Mercedes 229.51 spec.

This is the oil I use...

I use 5w-40 in summer and the 5w-30 in winter. 229.51 Mobile oil. I also get it at avlube.com. Mercedes only uses the 5w-40 year round.

Tony why such a difference in price between the 30 and 40 weight? Thoughts?

As stated the more important thing is to use 229.51 spec oil. Chances are these oils are right on the border line between 30w and 40w. I doubt there is a huge difference between the 5w30 and 5w40. The OEM oil is the Mobil1 ESP Forumula M which is listed as a 5w40 and that is what I use.

I wondered that one myself. The only thing I can think of is that they sell more 5w40 since that is what Mercedes uses year round.

I use to order my oil from the Jeep dealer, they ordered the wrong oil 2 out of 3 times, and the dealer is 70 miles away. The dealer that was closer, didn't even wanna bother with the oil, couldn't get it through their heads that I needed mobil 1 "ESP" oil, and not the mobil 1 they had in stock.

Mercedes had the oil and filter in stock, and at a cheaper price, and the parts counter was so professional, parts guys knew their stuff. So I run Mobil 1 5-40 esp.
