5W-30 or 5W-40 for my '08 WK CRD?

I'm going to be changing the oil soon on my '08 WK CRD and the owner's manual says to use 5W-30, but I've read one post where it says to now use 5W-40. Which do you think is best?

You live in Minnesota... it doesn't get "desert" hot there so I would use the 5w30. The 40 weight is too thick and will rob you of MPG

Please do a search for CRD oil changes on this forum. Make sure the oil meets the Mercedes 229.51 spec.

This is the oil I use...

I use 5w-40 in summer and the 5w-30 in winter. 229.51 Mobile oil. I also get it at avlube.com. Mercedes only uses the 5w-40 year round.

As stated the more important thing is to use 229.51 spec oil. Chances are these oils are right on the border line between 30w and 40w. I doubt there is a huge difference between the 5w30 and 5w40. The OEM oil is the Mobil1 ESP Forumula M which is listed as a 5w40 and that is what I use.

I wondered that one myself. The only thing I can think of is that they sell more 5w40 since that is what Mercedes uses year round.

I use to order my oil from the Jeep dealer, they ordered the wrong oil 2 out of 3 times, and the dealer is 70 miles away. The dealer that was closer, didn't even wanna bother with the oil, couldn't get it through their heads that I needed mobil 1 "ESP" oil, and not the mobil 1 they had in stock.

Mercedes had the oil and filter in stock, and at a cheaper price, and the parts counter was so professional, parts guys knew their stuff. So I run Mobil 1 5-40 esp.
