3.7 Throttle body air box removal ?

I was just wondering if anyone has attempted to remove the 3.7 L Throttle body air box for improved performance ? I currently have a K&N intake and can't see how funneling that into a large box then into the throttle body can be that great ? I'm just curious and have been thinking about fabricating up a elbow from the stock throttle body to my K&N intake tube. In my idea mind, direct piping with less impedance is better flow/performance and the air should tumble less before entering the throttle body.

Only thing is, you'll have to solder on some extra wire for the sensor on the intake near the throttle body because the hole for the sensor on the liberty tube is on the other side, no big deal though, took me a whole 15 min. to get it all installed.
