2007 Grand Cherokee transmission overheat and stall problem

Hey guys, I don't post much, but I lurk a lot. I was wondering if you guys could offer me some help with a problem. This past Wednesday my Jeep stalled out on me at a light and then refused to start for more than a few seconds. If it starts long enough for me to see, it flashes a message like "transmission overheat" or something along that line and idles vey roughly. My first thought was to check the transmission fluid, but I've since learned that I have to get it towed to the dealership to do that, as I don't have a dipstick on my year/model. Any suggestions on other things I can check myself today? I know this is a very open question and it could be any number of things, but I'm just looking for some really common causes and to be pointed in the right direction. Before that day I haven't had a problem with her.

Oh, it's a 2007 3.7 V6 with 60k on the odometer.

Thank you for any help you can throw my way.

this happened to me and it seems to be something thats happening a lot lately, im guesing due to the heat we've been having. that being said..

i had my tranny serviced, and still had the same problem. i brought it to a transmission place and they said the tranny was driving fine and any further inspection would cost me $2500+. i called a mechanic and told him exactly what was occuring and he says its fairly common that WKs have some problems with the transmission cooler. unfortunatly he cant take me in until Tues (week from today) so i dont know it that is the for sure problem.
