2007 CRD - OBD code P0471

Any ideas?

Generic code searching returns:

1. Supply tube blocked or damaged
2. Faulty EP sensor
3. Faulty ECM
4. Exhaust Pressure Sensor

Looked in my smancy JEEP manuals and didn't find anything.

Symptoms: None, really. Light came on coming home from dinner. Car was driving fine. For one cycle it did seem like it had zero boost, but since then, no issues. MPG might be down just a little

Pulled engine cover and don't see any loose or disconnected cables. Turbo inlet and EGR tube are firmly attached. There is more oil in the area (damn) and noticeable oil around the plastic skid pan near the drain plug, but no leaks from the plug itself.

My guesses:

1. EGR
2. Swirl motor
3. some faulty sensor and a bogus generic OBD code

Thoughts?

google seems to suggest a dpf sensor. if thats the case, looks like you will need to take it to the dealer.

These could be interesting...maybe a plugged DPF????...How many miles???

Sent the code to a guy I know on the Sprinter Forum...I will pass along what he says.

can you remove the inmotion tune before you drop it off? I'm not saying the tune caused the problem, I'm just wondering if the dealer will do something and erase the tune.

There is no way to remove the inmotion tune... unless you have the OBD tool that was used to load the tune...

Besides Inmotion claims there is no way to detect the tune as it is a adjustment to the factory tune....

Now if they reflash the ECm or replace it, well then he is kind of screwed... Inmotion might work with him though to get it reloaded...

Be sure to update us on the status of this issue.

Hi Scott,

Generically P0471 means, "Exhaust Pressure Sensor "A" Circuit
Range/Performance"

Unfortunately, Daimler's technology doesn't use the same codes as other
vehicles, so generic code readers provide potentially misleading codes like
P0471.

If you do a search for that on techauthority for P0471 you get nothing
back... it's as if the service documentation is saying, "no such thing."

This is the price we pay for owning DaimlerChrysler technology: only their
diagnostic equipment can make sense of the situation. In this case it's
StarSCAN, StarMOBILE or WiTECH.

It needs to be scanned a dealership scan tool for the truth.

I suspect it's either the EGR valve, the EGR temperature sensor or the EGR
cooler that is the culprit... it might be the DPF if there are a lot of
miles on it and the DPF's "getting full," but only a dealership scan tool is
going to tell the truth (like how much soot is in the DPF - if it's not
full, than the problem's probably the cooler or the EGR valve).

Since it is a 2007 with only 26,000 miles it seems it does not have a lot of highway miles. Are most of your trips short. If so, the DPF probably does not have an opportunity to fully regenerate as it is shut off too soon. My guess. Do you tow anything? I have found if I tow something the engine always runs better afterward. It likes to work.

While I do use it for short trips, it is mainly used for towing my track car, and that is where most of the miles come from. 5000 lbs and usually with the cruise set around 80 mph. I work it

For daily use, there is about a 5 mi. round-trip commute (park-n-ride), but the weekends we are all over the place.... and I run the heck out of it when I am in it

The DPF did a regen on Saturday, and since then, the light has gone out although I'm not sure it is related. Probably won't get it in to the dealer for a couple of weeks... which is when I originally planned to get it in for some other small stuff. I'll update when they scan it.

Tuesday morning, 1/2 way into my morning commute, power drops and the Electronic Throttle Control (red brackets and lightning bolt) illuminate on the dash. I get to my destination, run through 6 on/off cycles with the motor and the light goes out.

Tuesday afternoon, hop in to go home and the MIL comes on instantly and I'm in limp mode. FWIW, it did run a regen on the way home.

Dropped it off at the dealer this morning (MIL still on, but no limp mode). They called and said it had several stored codes and it would take a day to go through them all.

Will update with results.

Can you let us know if they can spot the InMotion tune in their work? I know they are not suppose to but I am a little uneasy with an extended warrenty.

Dealer called last night and said that, in fact, it was a sensor identified as an Exhaust Pressure Sensor. They kept it over night and will re-run codes this morning and test drive to make sure that this resolves the issue.

Service advisor stated that he had the jeep pretty torn down... where exactly is this sensor? I would have thought it would have been between the turbo and the DPF?

yup, though a bit tough to get to, if it really is DPF related.

x2. I also have the InMotion Tune and have worried that it may be detected next time the CRD's in for service. Still have about 1 1/2 years of factory warranty remaining and hate to have it voided.
