2007 Commander popping noise

Hey guys. I'm having an issue (well, a couple... "check gas cap" followed by CEL, popping noise, got the clogged sunroof tubes sorted out, rear AC lines corroded through) and was wondering if anyone could offer advice.

2007 Commander 4.7L with 76k miles. It is popping pretty badly when turning, hit off camber bumps, and I have even noticed it even when just hitting the brakes. I tried to find it by myself on the shop floor. When you jack it up from the center, as the tires scoot together and suspension raises, you can hear a pop. Same as when you let it down, as the suspension settles, it usually pops. This is with the wheels straight forward and tires not rotating.

From what I've read, it sounds like a lot of people point to front joints being bad. Could this be with the above situation though? I'm pulling my hair out. It is a semi-violent pop, so I'd like to not just let it go.

Thank you in advance!
Nick

So i think you and i have the same poping noise issue. Mine happens when braking hard or accelrating hard. i also get it over wash board and when really cranking the wheels hard to the left. The pooping noise sounds like something is under tension and then letting loose? I took my jeep to a local dealer and he told me it could be my lower control arm bushings/ swarbar links/ struts.... however i do not think any of those are making the poping noise

I would say ball joints but I'm not too familiar with IFS set ups yet. What ever is the equivalent for the IFS set up is where I would be looking.

My friend with a dodge pickup gets the same popping when he makes a sharp turn going a little too fast, it puts alot of stress on them. Not the only way for them to pop though

I'd replace the front sway bar bushing first. Cheapest and easiest and you'd be surprised how noisy they can be. Made mine sound like a POS beater and afterwards like a brand new quiet suv.

Check your control arms, I had that when my lower arms were sliding slightly out of position because they weren't torqued down all the way.

Thank you for all of the replies.
I tried putting my hand on different components when jacking it up/down to see what would "jar" the most, but didn't have great results. I unbolted the sway bar end links and still yielded the same results.
I put my hands at 12 and 6 on the tire to check wheel bearings, 3 and 9 to check tie rods with no play felt. What's the best way to check ball joints and control arm bushings?

Thanks in advance.

My LCA's were not torqued properly or tightly enough when I got an alignment done. You could feel the pop in your feet.

This sounds like it could be your issue.

Sounds great, thank you. I haven't gotten a chance to pull mine in and mess with it any more but hopefully this weekend.

I'm going to look at this tomorrow for my girl friend. Any thoughts?

are you using wheel spacers on the front ? my 07 front end started popping when turning after having the wheels rotated. turns out that the shop over torqued the lug nuts & broke 3 studs on the left front spacer. I was real lucky I found that one. took the spacers out & no more popping.

After looking at it some more, still no luck on finding it yet. Tie rods, ball joints, wheel bearings, end links, sway bar bushings, all feel tight. You can also hear the noise when just sitting in park and turning back and forth. It is going up on the lift on Monday. I'll report back what I come up with.

Thank you for the words of advice and suggestions so far!
