Portable generator.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread, but I still believe plugging the sump pump into the Jeep's inverter outlet will cause the fuse to blow. Lets all try it and see!

i love it when people forget about Volt drop, copper losses and all the other things that skew real world calcs

we have somebody here who knows exactly whats gonna happen. you can do math all day floks but experience usually provides the best answers.

I do have a correction to something I posted yesterday. The Jeep inverter is not a two-level, with a high and low setting. It is only one-level and good for only 150 watts. Not sure where I dreamed it up. To answer the question as to what can be plugged in - things like cell phone chargers, portable DVD players, portable video games, laptop computers, etc.

Those that want an inverter for things like power tools may want to forego the factory set up and buy something with some punch. I have a 750 watt inverter that clips to the battery terminals. It can be wired in permanently if one was clever enough to find a place for it but as drysuitdiver mentioned, the cooler you keep it, the longer it will live.

wow maybe i dont know what i am talking about. by grounded, I meant that the outlet accept three-pronged plugs instead of the two-pronged outlets ive seen in other chrysler vehicles.

still needs a physical connection to the 'ground' floor earth soil mud sand ( actually not sand as thats a real good non conductor) call it what you want.

otherwise its lulling you into a false sense of security that its going to give you protection against indirect contact

Um, then how do Navy ships have safe grounding? If the outlets are using the same ground as the negative wire of the DC system, then it is grounded.

Don't forget, in the UK there are 3 separate connections for a grounded connection. In the US the grounding connector is physically connected together with the neutral at the junction box in houses. We only use a single phase 120V system over here, not the three phase 220/240V system you use. There is nothing compatible between the two. We don't even use the same terminology over here. To us ground = earth.

Using a US system, so long as the round connector at the socket reads zero resistance to the Jeep's negative chassis, it is grounded.

And to whomever said that the battery voltage system on our Jeeps is actually a 6V- and 6V+ system that makes up 12V has obviously never followed where the negative cable from the battery terminates at. The chassis is at 0V and the positive cable is at 12VDC. There is no arguing this. The negative cable is physically and electrically connected TO the chassis to ENSURE the chassis is at 0V.

[EDIT] Just realized YOU were the one stating both things I was talking about...

well voltage only measures the difference in potential energy. both the positive and negative to a battery will have no voltage if they cant make a connection to each other. you have to use two leads on a multi-meter.

And it also just dawned on me that I dug this up from a year ago.

GREAT generator!

That's the one I use to run my tire warmers, fan, radio, cell charge, etc. at the track. It's small (only 45lbs) and will run about 8 hours on a gallon of gas. Pumps out 1800 watts continuous and 2000 peak. It's also quiet as a church mouse.
