07 Commander Hemi Stalling

I had the plugs replaced with platinums about 30,000miles. I'm now at about 40,000 miles and my commander started stalling on me. The first time it stalled the "check engine" light came on. Code read "barometric pressure too low". Reset the error and has not come on since. It has stalled 4 more times since, all while moving. I've read that platinum plugs may not work well with this engine but I haven't had any problems until 10,000 miles/2 months later. I've heard about recalls on the 06 4.7L commanders but not this one. Any input?

"Barometric Pressure too low" means "A sensor is reporting that the barometric pressure is too low" - the problem is the sensor, not the pressure.

My friend had a Ford Escort where the mass airflow sensor kept getting fogged with oil getting past the EGR valve. Every time it got dirty, it would start stalling out. It would occasionally flash an error code, but usually nothing. The first time it happened, my brother, a mechanic, told me to pull the electric lead to the sensor. Without ANY signal from the sensor, the computer dropped into "limp" mode, and it ran worse than normal, but far better than with the bad sensor. Incidentally, I was able to clean it up several times with wd-40 before it finally died for real.

I read all the horror stories about platinmum plugs also. I just did my 30,000 mile service myself and used the oem recommended plugs. They are a champion copper plug. The old plugs didn't look too bad but I wanted them replaced. All I can say is I think I would start by replacing the plugs and see if your problems go away. They are only $2.00 each at the parts store. A very cheap fix if thats the problem. I read a story about a guy being without his Commander for 2 months before they flew someone in from Chrysler to fix it. You guessed, it was the platinmum plugs. They replaced them with Champion Copper plugs and the trouble went away.

Well, I went to the dealership and they read 2 codes. P0688-ECM/PCM Power Relay Sense Circuit/Open and P0884-TCM Power Input Signal Intermittent. They said that these 2 codes were stored codes that pretty much cancelled each other out. They reset the codes and did a software update. They also test drove the Commander and (surprise) could not replicate the stalls. I got charged a hundred bucks for them to do a software update and that's about it. Hopefully that did the trick, if not I'll start by putting in the copper plugs. I'll let everybody know if I stall anymore.

I would put the factory plugs back in. With these electronic ignitions you got to have the corect plugs in there.

barometric pressure is monitored by the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor. easy to replace on the front right side of the engine.

Could not agree more. Why people do not simply follow the Manufacturer recommendations on these plugs with these engines is beyond me!

Well, originally I was curious as to why it required a tune up at 30,000 miles and why they put copper plugs in. I spoke with a few mechanic friends and they said that Chrysler was just trying to cash in on more service schedules since most people just take their vehicle to the dealership, no questions asked. I believed that as well. This platinum plug/mds bad relationship was new to me, most people here and ,until recently, Chrysler engineers. In fact, I just got off the phone with Mopar and they still say they'd never heard of it, platinums should work fine with the 5.7 Hemi w/mds. Well, I'm not buying it. If my Commander still stalls after the software update, I'm swapping out the plugs. Thanks for the input.

And now the "Service 4wd" light is on. Will it ever end?

As far as the "service 4wd" message is concerned, I took it to the dealership and they blew a bunch of sand and salt out of the sensor that plugs into the transfer case. They also did a complete software update and drove it about 20 miles. No errors anymore. They also said that that MAY have been the cause of the stalls. They sure use the word "may" a lot. We'll see if that did the trick.

My coworker said his Dodge Ram was giving him the same Service 4wd code so he took it to dealer. They said every few months, put shift to 4WD LO. This will "lubicate" the 4WD system and solve the problem.

Warning: I'm not a mechanic, just throwing out a suggestion if it happens again.

After the platinum plug install in the Hemi for 4500 miles and six months, I have no issues to report. The motor is running perfectly.

I do have the "Service 4x4 System" issue, but that is unrelated to the plugs, and that issue was there before the plug swap. I plan to swap the ELSD solenoids in both differentials at the next fluid swap interval to see if that fixes that issue.

Here's some additional info. I had 10W30 in it because my oil cap said so. I looked at the manual and this forum and found the it recommends 5W20 so I did an oil change with the 5W20. ALSO, my Commander stalled out both with and without the Tow/Haul button on. That means my MDS was deactivated and it still stalled out. I have no clue what that means but my Commander has not stalled out or had the service 4wd message since the sensor in the transfer case was cleaned.

It's the plugs. Change them. And the 5.7L requires 5W20, which will be the source of many issues also.

No stalling yet, but the Service 4WD light came on again after about 3000 miles. I'll check the transfer case sensor to see if it's dirty again. This kind of stuff never happens to my 76 CJ5. No warning lights...hell, no interior lights to worry about. No doors or roof either.
