I am shopping for a crd wk it will be a daily driver. it will get lifted with 285s. it will tow a 14 foot landscape trailer with about 1600 - 2000 lbs on it about once a month anywhere from 2 hours to 9 hour trips. I found a really clean 07 with 51k on it and loaded even rear dvd for the kids. should I hold off and try and find a 08 so I get the better towing options like the hill assist?
93 YJ-8" with 37" boggers ,caged and locked-SOLD!
01 WJ-6.5" IRO LA ,285/75/16`s ,4.56 gears-SOLD!
Have an '07 with 101k miles on it. I use it to tow a 14' open trailer with racecar and gear on it at least 2x a month (about 5-6k lbs total with all my gear). Get 18-20 mpg towing going 65 mph. Love the CRD as it just hauls the mail and hardly ever has to downshift to pass or go up steep hills (like the hills around Columbia, MO). I've not done a GDE ecu tune which helps increase power and gives you even better mpg. One recommendation is to have trailer brakes as the stock brakes on the WK are pathetic (they are hardly adequate to stop the WK with just a single passenger in it let alone loaded up or towing even a small trailer). I'd highly recommend the Stillen Brake upgrade as well (cross drilled rotors and much better brake pads) as my WK now stops like a dream with no fade and no more warped rotors.
It's extremely unlikely, but you might be able to find a '09 out there. About two hundred were made, but were sold as a '08.5. I have yet to actually see one in the wild. the only way to check is to run the VIN, and if the vehicle production date is between August 2008 - November 2008. But beyond that - '08 is a better choice. Alot of the "problems" were remedied, but not 100%. Plus the '08 get's the revised interior(better Navigation if thats your thing) as well as the different front end(aesthetics really, but still).
I have an 07 and have had no problems. These vehicles with the CRD were sold in Europe and elsewhere from 05 so that should rid any "first year" worries. However, 08s got a refreshed front bumper, HIDs, nicer interior, and some other small stuff. Mechanically, they are the same. If you can find an 07 in good condition for a good price, I wouldn't hesitate, they're rare enough as they are!
crd where sold in europe and the rest of the world.
check pictures of the 07 and 08 and then decide, because mechanically (including engine), they are the same.
I would not rely more than 60% to a TSB list, it is "it can" happen rather than "it will" happen. Checking the list, and checking if the car already has that problem would be a smart move though.
My RWD 07 (built May 2007) does not have hill ascent/descent control, but does have swaybars front/rear. I upgraded the rear, and I'm about to upgrade the brakes. I haven't had any unusual issues with it since I bought it a year ago (normal stuff like battery, a glow plug, and the much reviled orange sealed air intake tube).
I was at the same crossroads as you scarecrow. I was looking for a DD and choosing between the 07 and 08. Went with the 08 for aesthetics. Nicer interior. I have a 300C sedan with the old style interior and was never the biggest fan.
I had the same question... and went with the 08 since it had the "fixes". Even with the fixes there are still a couple issues with the 08. This was also because I found an 08 with just over 10k on it.
That hill assist does not make much difference. The 07 will usually be less than an 08. An 07 with only 51k should be in good shape. People that have them usually do not sell them, and they are hard to find in the first place.
When I tow 3000k on the back you don't even notice it.
I will reiterate what others have said above. The 08 refresh is certainly nice for the extra features. The HID lights and the mygig are excelent. I have also used the 110v quite a bit. If possible I would choose the 08 everytime, but they are not easy to find especially with low miles. Either year you will certainly enjoy the engine and love it with with the GDE tune. Enjoy!
