Any codes? Check engine light or service 4wd system on display? There's a trick you pull a fuse and engage trans pull forward and plug fuse in again. I haven't had to do it yet luckily...
Search for it.

yes p0 0700 and a couple emission codes but dealer said there were 97 codes stored from radio, sunroof, rain sensing wipers, hvac, power seat, heated seat, tcm, ecm, cooling fan which did blow the fuse when i tried to replace it before it went to dealer, but everything else has no issues

I wonder if your transfer case is in neutral? 700 is a generic request from the TCM to turn the MIL on. Try pushing the vehicle while it's in park, if you can move it, chances are the transfer case went in to neutral, theres a recall called N23 that was enacted in response to the transfer case computer sending false signals to the shift motor, when damaged, to shift into neutral. The recall was designed to disable the shift motor should it sense improbable situations, a lot of people who had this recall done, had it done improperly and it was disabling perfectly fine transfer cases. At any rate, I would start there.

it is sitting at the dealer right now, they wanted to know how many hours we wanted them to spend so i put it on hold until i done some further research. what if it will not move while in park? When i did shift it i thought i could feel a light vibration in the brake pedal like most vehicles when the come out of park

If you have a P0700 code then you have other 700 series codes and they are more than likely not from history. If you haven't had any prior issues then I would say you're either low on transmission fluid or your electronic shift on ESM is dirty or defective. Does your display show [P][R][N][D] by chance ? That usually indicates a problem with the Electronic Shift Module .

A Jeep dealer asked that question?

Exactly how much rocket science do they think is involved in diagnosing a 545RFE? Cripes, basic diagnosis is flat rate at every dealer I've ever been to.

This same problem happened to my 06 wk 4.7. It would come in and out of park but all gears behaved like neutral. Confirm it goes into park and neutral - if it Stays in park only then it can be the shifter and there are manual overrides and cleaning threads online for that. But if it was like mine and went into and out of park / neutral, then read on. The dealership towed it at their expense (long story) and told me the filter inside the transmission had popped off. Fixed it free of charge, no recurrence in 20k since.

So it should cost the same as tranny fluid and filter service and have them replace both filters. One just snaps in I guess and they said it had popped out.

I had the exact problem as well. Drove home fine, but the next morning would not move. Every gear acted as if it were neutral. Turned out to be what was said above, the spin on filter for the trans came loose so no fluid could be primed.
