Recently began having problems with my 2005 Grand Cherokee liftgate. I can unlatch it, and it opens about 2 inches, but acts like it is jammed and won't open any further. Glass opens just fine, no problems. Any ideas what could be causing this, and how to fix it? Thanks!
I considered it being frozen shut since we've had heavy snow/ice in the past week. However on the day I tried it, temp was above 40 degrees. No body damage to vehicle that I'm aware of. I climbed up to see if anything was interfering with open motion. Don't see anything from outside, or inside. I'll try again after work and report back. Appreciate the help!
I'm having exact problem, before it completely failed it would be hard to lift all the way open, you would hear a pop. Now it only lifts about 2 inches and feels as if it would break to lift all the way up. Did You ever find out how to fix this problem?
Yes. It was my lift shocks - they had gotten fairly rusty and weren't allowing the liftgate to open. If you keep rocking it back and forth, it should lift all the way. You can either replace the lift shocks (about $15 each at Auto Zone) or you can use some WD-40 to keep it lubricated enough to open until you can replace the lift shocks. Hope that helps!
Thanks!! It did help, I was already gonna use the wd 40 today but it was the rocking it that helped open it. I was scared to before, thought it would break. I sprayed it for now, guess I by the parts later...... Thanks again
