When my jeep only clicked instead of starting, the :battery charge was less than 85%. After charging to 100%, my jeep starts every time!
Note: Any good battery charger now will have 3 or 4 stages of electronically-controlled charging for a discharged battery, with the finishing voltage usually somwhat higher and the current lower.
The aternator has a high charge rate, so it gets you back to 85% quickly. If you are going to let it sit for several days, a trickle charger in the power port will bring it back up to 100%. I use a Battery Tender and the Sears 12V/2amp battery maintainer.
I have read (forget where) that the spiral-wound Optima batteries require a different charging regime than standard lead-acid types. Some alternator voltage regulators will not bring them back up and the battery appears to be dead after only a short service life. However, the anecdotal stories claim that it can be bought right back with the right charging technique. Don't know for sure, so I went with a DieHard Gold (Group 94R) battery. Several of the emerging electronic gremlins disappeared after the battery changeout (after all, it was the factory OEM and 5.5 yrs old).

I know this is a little late. I just had to have my starter replaced. I am perfectly capable, but I just didn't have the time. As I've read, the first time can take hours.

Great job on the starter recondition. I'm sure that's all my GC's started needed. Back in the old days (60's& 70s for me) my Dad would rebuild starters and alternators that broke down. Nowadays its almost always replace.

Thanks, Pumbaa.

This is definitely one of those jobs worth paying to have done. Good luck!
