'05 ESP Woes

Alright, I want to disable the ESP to see how much It may be hindering my WK. I read that you hold the traction control button for five seconds and some such nonsense, but all I get is a traction control disabled message and a sore finger. Any ideas?

This approach doesn't work with the 05 -- you can only "half way" disable it on our models.

Well, nards. And how is that done? Just took a couple of passes with just pressing the TC button, and it went from bogging badly to barking the tires until the AWD kicks in.

You gotta pull the ABS fuse, then you loose ESP and ABS.Only way to do it and if you get in a accident and they dig into your vehicle and find it's been disabled your out of luck for any insurance coverage and maybe sued by your insurance company for fraud since your getting a ABS/ESP discount.

Ah, okay. Yeah, I think I'll avoid that. I like my ABS.

Actually ESP was not standard on '05 models. So if you can't turn it off then most likely you don't have it. I think it became standard in 06. A build sheet will tell you if you have it or not.

Ah, okay. That actually makes a good bit of sense.

Also I would not pull the ABS fuse because you would loose the traction control. The Jeep uses the ABS to modulate the brakes to transfer the power the the wheels with traction.

All WK's have ESP,traction control,ABS,and that brake lock junk(SRT's excluded).

No, all WK's DO NOT have ESP. All 06's and up DO HAVE Traction control and ESP. All 05's have traction control, but ESP was optional that year. So if you can only turn off Traction Control that means you don't have ESP. My WK only has Traction Control and I have the build sheet to confirm it. My owners manual also states that Traction Control as standard and ESP as optional. Go to this link.... http://www.wkjeeps.com/wk_whats_new.htm and scroll down to 2006. You will see that it states " Electronic Stability Program with Electronic Roll Mitigation and Brake Assist standard on all models". So those were not standard in 05.

I have ESP on my WK, but I still can't turn it off. What's that say?

I would ask you how you know you have ESP then. Is ESP specifically listed on your build sheet? Or how are you attepting to turn it off?

Yes, it is on my build sheet when I looked up my VIN. Holding down the traction control button does not turn it off though.

You can not turn it fully off on 05's, only partially by pressing the button once.
