My friend modified a regular car trunk bikerack so that the 2 bars stick straight up... we then mounted this on the spare tire of the Jeep. It's a little difficult to explain so hopefully the picture helps. The idea of this is to keep the pressure of the Kayak and Canoe odd the rear bar of the softop. It rained on the way home but we didn't get too wet as we were able to drive fast enough the whole way.

I found this forum because of this post

And confirmed my suspicions...

We dont need no stinking roof racks!

However on days when its raining i do have a problem with water leaking in from the center ratchet strap because it follows the strap around the roll bar and into the cab.

Solution is to just remove center strap because fore and aft straps are plenty.

I strap mine to the roll bar usually.

I've tried putting my kayak on the hardtop and it was not very stable. I have huge kayaks though (14 and 15ft sit on tops)

You can buy a cheap boat trailer on craigslist too. I use my jon boat trailer occasionally.

Not a kayak, but a 17' 100 or so pound Ram-X canoe which we used all last summer and transported like this, with no top.

Sits on the windshield frame, the sport bar and is strapped twice in the center and tied down front and back.

We probably go ten miles at highway speeds each way, and it never shifts at all.

The bonus is, if we roll the jeep over into a drainage ditch, we probably will float.

I'm planning to build my own rack. It will likely be something that I can take apart when not in use. If anybody has done this before, I'd be interested in seeing the design.

jeep.jpg. This is the Body Armor roof rack, easy to install, stays on year around, works with both my soft and hard tops

The downside to running 37's...now I need a ladder to get the kayaks on top.
In hindsight, this is a funny pic:

1.25 BL on your Jeep would be perfect. Just my 2 cents!

Here's mine. Two pieces of industrial foam and two ratchet straps. We haven't had any issues and we take it everywhere, even off roading sometimes.
