Agreed. Plus he has a winch with at least a 80ft reach, and I didnt see the front tires move at all - probably just in 2wd.

I don't think anybody here is going to complain. Besides, it's something you did with your LJ...

Yeah, he was a beauty. I live in the mountains in SoCal, and catch & release on average 2 rattlers every summer out of my back yard, so I'm pretty familiar with the beast. These are a different species than we have at home, so I was really thrilled to see him....almost ran him over by accident!

This was on the El Camino....about 200 yds from Tinajas Altas, in the Barry Goldwater Range....so yeah, Yuma County.

Here's a couple shots (taken from the LJ!) of a Gopher Snake that we encouraged to get off the middle of the trail....and also some snake tracks we saw earlier in the trip.

That's exactly where I though it was. I go to the TA's fairly frequently.
I have seen four different species of rattlesnakes there. Have yet to see an atrox in there though. You saw him on the main dirt road?

My first time there (not the last!), so I took a road in from the main intersection (we came from the East) that was on a 45* angle from that well traveled intersection....it was marked with small sign that said "4WD Trail" and was fairly overgrown. I didn't know it wasn't the main road in (didn't care anyway) and so Mr. Atrox was disturbed. In the photo of him "running away" you see the driver's side rear flare, and the tracks of my front wheel....he was under that sage brush at the bottom right of the photo, and my front wheel must have missed him by inches. His rattle was so loud and so fast, that at first I thought I'd punctured my tire on something!

What are the others that you've seen there?

I don't doubt he was loud, big string of rattles. I come in from the town of Wellton. I did see a dor atrox on the pavement a few yrs ago, but never in the mts.
I've seen speckleds, a blacktail while hiking, a few sidewinders and a mojave on the main dirt rd.
Notice my username. lol
