I convinced my GF to buy a YJ for $500 from a co-worker who was going to take this thing to the scrappers. He bought it from some-guy that was going to torch-it and try to claim insurance. It had a rusted through frame, the soft-top didn't seal, there was no 4th gear, was out-of-province - and a lot of other problems.
Body-lift and I made some some boomer-shackles at work on the laser
Slip-yoke-eliminator and new drive-shaft that cost more than the Jeep did in the first place. Also replaced the transmission.
Added a set of Cragar V5 rims with center-caps and put a hard-top onto it. Used TJ-upper doors that I cut the supporting-rods for and made the uppers seal up against the hard-top.
Then put flames on the side with a new bestop softtop. Going to put a similar-style tribal-flame decal on the hood in the next few weeks (custom-cut at a local shop).
Yes, that is me sittin' in the background just after putting the decals onto the Jeep, enjoyin' a beer, sitting on a spare driver seat pulled outta that YJ
.... and after all that time, blood and money, we snag a '98 GC with the 5.9 ... let the mods begin on it

2000 VW Golf 2.0 w/ 140k
$1000
Bought it from a coworker. Had a bad water pump, temp switch and some other misc stuff. $250 and a week of casually getting around to it and I have a sweet DD. Averaging 30 mpg.

I got this beast for free. Only had to drag it across 3 states to get it home.
Got it when it had about 130,000 miles on it. It has over 164,000 now. No mechanical problems other than ones I caused while doing routine maintenance, ie belts, oil change, tune up. Been a great car and I beat on it every day. Love it and will drive it until it dies.
Got my Jeep for $1000 and only had to drag that about 7 miles to get it home.
Old:

New: Painted in garage with my dad, and new tires.

Fraser,
That is basically how the Jeep looks like for now (except it has the winter hard-top on). My front-yard has 4 Jeeps and my friend is storing Jeep #4 in my signature.
