I had a picture of my back end but can't seem to find it anymore....

I welded the tire carrier holes shut and repainted it. I'll take a new one tomorrow

Maybe he doesn't have the cash for a rear bumper/tire carrier. That's why I did that to mine. I didn't want to trash my tailgate, so I took off the assembly and put the spare in the back of the TJ in place of the rear seat.

Lots of people run up to 33s with the stock carrier tho. I am just wondering as to what his plans were I was not ripping him.

Oh no I wasn't saying you were ripping on him, just giving a possible explanation. I tried to run my spare on the stock tailgate but it just wasn't liking the idea of supporting a 33x12.50" spare on steelies, way too much weight.

Thanks for all the posts! The idea of putting a 33x12.50 on the tailgate, and POSSIBLY having the hinges fail are compelling me to run without a spare. I love my tube bumpers (say what you will), so i want to keep them, instead of getting a tire carrier. The pics look great though!

Are you going to run a spare in the back of the Jeep or just not run one at all? I wouldn't really recommend running totally without one, and a lot of people won't let you go on trail rides with them if you don't have a full size spare. I wanted to save my tailgate while I saved up money for a new swing out carrier so I took out my back seat and strapped down my spare in there, any plans like that or just not going to run one at all?

Have you looked at the bestop tire carrier? It doesn't mount to the bumper, and it takes the weight off the tub by using brackets that go down to the frame and up over the tub lip, I think to the sport bar mount if I remember correctly. It also has the advantage of opening and closing with your tailgate, but takes the weight off it. You might be able to run one with your current bumper. I actually went with a cheap carrier bumper and think I'd have been happier with the bestop.

yeah i looked at that carrier... i just need to call bestop and see if it will still work with having guards on the tail lamps.

I think the bestop carrier is your best option too, and IMHO I would definitely rather have a spare tire than a light guard that really doesn't actually do anything.
