I replaced my starter after my truck sat for a few years and the starter froze up. Every since I have had an odd rattle when I am under load and give it gas. I narrowed it down to the starter and shimmed it with 2 flat washers on each bolt for a total of 4 flat washers. That seemed to fix it for the most part but occasionally it still hits. What is going on? I replaced the flexplate just before it was parked. Probably has about 1000 miles on the new flexplate. Should I throw another washer on each bolt? That seems like a lot of shimming to me.
edit: I guess I should add that I never had this problem with the old starter/new flex plate before the starter froze up on me.

Sounds like the auto parts store sold you a Ford starter instead of an AMC one!

Just to update this incase anybody else runs into the same problem. I finally got the truck back on the road and started tracking down the cause of this. Turns out the little disk on the center of the torque converter that sits in the end of the crank was bent causing the flexplate to wobble.
