wagoneer questions

im looking to swap wagoneer axles under my yj, and ive read all there is to read on which years i should get and everything but im still a little confused. now the grand wagoneer from 1987-1991 is the one i want right, 44 front and rear?
now does a 1987 wagoneer have the same axles as the grand wagoneer?

A 1987 Wagoneer is an XJ Cherokee with woodgrain so, no, it won't have the same axles. You want a Grand Wagoneer.

Are you planning on a SOA conversion?

If you decide to, 1977.5-1979 F-250 axles will bolt in SOA. That's a HPD44/D60 combo with factory flat-tops, dual-piston discs,and 3" non-cast tubes with 1/2" wall thickness.

Yup. Those years of F-250 & F-350 are SOA from the factory and the perch spacing is even closer, like only 1/4" or 1/2" off per side.

You'll still have to set up your steering, brakes, etc, but they represent the most bang for the buck. While still an upgrade to the D30, the 1980-up FSJ D44 is pretty much a turd compared to the F-250 unit. If you're going to spend the $, make the better investment.

The other nice thing is that when you're ready (or find one first) the HPD60 found in F-250 Camper Specials, Sno-Fighters, and F-350's of the same years swap right in place of the 77.5-79 HPD44. F-250 and F-350 frames were the same during those years.

They're going to be wider, but a high-backspace rim like H1's or H2's minimizes the width and looks in proportion with the height gained with SOA.

Some early '77s are low pinion in front (that's what's in my '84 J10)

A low-pinion from a what? Any D44 is going to be an upgrade. Its just a matter of what kind of return you're going to get on your investment and what your future plans for the vehicle are.
