Voltage gauge goes really high. Need my truck

At average speeds the volt needle sits between 13-15. At higher highway (over 55mph) the needle is way high towards 18. Nothing has changed recently from an electrical perspective. I am worried about an electrical fire.
What should I be looking for as I will need to drive her as its calling for snow this week.

Sounds like a problem with you alternator voltage regulator. Could also be a problem with the internal voltmeter. You could manually check the voltage while having someone rev up the engine. If the voltage stays at 14v then the internal voltmeter is the problem. If it increases with rpm then the alternator voltage regulator is the problem.

If your battery is charging at 18 volts you will ruin it in no time. I've seen a batteries swell up and burst from being overcharged. You will probably smell sulfur escaping from it before it bursts sending battery acid all over your engine compartment. It would be best to get a multimeter on those battery posts ASAP and see what voltage it is actually getting at high rpm.

Worst case, pull the alternator and have it tested at a parts store. That may not help much, because they sometimes will only be able to tell you if it is or isn't charging rather than if it's charging properly. I also second the voltage check at the battery. If you boil away too much electrolyte in your battery you will be replacing it soon or melting the lead, not to mention the hydrogen you will be producing can become explosive...
