Trandfer Case doing funny things

Hi All:
When starting from a stop my 1984 G. W. will sometimes seem to be
disengaged, in that the engine will rev but no movement. When this
happens there will be a chattering like gears meshing and then there
is engagement and it moves. The noise seems to come from the
transfer case. This does not happen all the time but is intermittent
thing.
Any ideas out there.

Thanks for the reply BJ
Sorry about the omission. It's a Model 229.

Has it been run in 4WD without the front hubs locked?

BJ to my knowledge it has not been run in four wheel drive with the
hubs unlocked. It was run in four wheel drive alright just before
this condition raised it's ugly head after going back to two wheel
high.

Talked to one of the guys here who knows NP229's really well and here is his response:

on that, it could be the linkage out of adjustment (typically look at the rubber / poly shift linkage bushings), but could also be low fluid (they take Dexron-Mercon II or III, either /or) or the viscous coupler low on fluid. Best bet is to drain the fluid with a light behind it as it drains, so he can see through the fluid.....watch for globs of silicon-gel coming out......if so, viscous coupler is probably toast.

Hope this helps.

Vacuum motor is probably not fully engaging. I found a new one at work (NAPA) if BJ's doesn't have them.
