torque convertor cover needed?

do i need a torque convertor cover for my th400? tranny makes ticking sounds on low rpm in every gear. i checked fexplate for cracks and for tightness of bolts. i cant find any issues. i took the cover off and sound went away. out it back on and came back. it may be bent from rocks and contacting flexplate????

i took off the cover again and the noise went away. flexplate looked like it had wear marks on some of the teeth but no marks on the cover.

sounds like a dent in the cover allowing the bolts to contact.

the cover is off so.... they dont appear to be getting an shinyer (sp?) guess ill just run it til it breaks something. the tranny sounds like its slipping/ shuddering in 1st gear anyways and i checked the fluid and only saw a little bit of crud on the bottom of the pan when i dropped it.

At this point ,, be prepared to change it again soon.. I would assume the tranny was neglected. if it was all this new fresh fluid will clean up more corrosion and gunk in side your tranny and possibly clog your new filter again.. So if its not to late buy a drain pan with a plug at least. maybe better be safe then sorry..

the tranny was decent when i got it. red fluid. i added a b&m cooler to help with the heat especially offroading. im about to add some Lucas tranny fluid to it and hope it helps. the b&m deep pan was on it when i got it and ive changed the fluid when i got it. its only been 8000 miles since ive had it. i kinda drive it like i stole it so i guess thats what i get

I don't think so. Maybe try a different cover. yours could be tweaked just enough to rub

i drove the truck a lot yesterday. transmission shifts fine. everything feels ok. i added a bottle of lucas tranny additive just to be safe. it makes the noise less. i noticed that it makes the noise after coming down a hill and stopping at a light or stop sign. it makes it in 2 areas, but way quieter now and it goes away quicker. maybe i just needed to drive it more or do 90 on the interstate

update for those searching online and find the same problem and like most other posts just end with no answer. flexplate was cracked so i got a new one. if our tranny shifts fine but hearing metallic screeching sounds than check your bolts and flexplate
