Tailgate problems on a 1990 GW

Hi everyone, I am brand new to this forum and also brand new to Grand Wagoneers. Wondering if anyone can help me or point me in the right direction with my "new" 1990 GW.

When I purchased the vehicle, the entire tailgate window and lock assemblies had been taken out. I think I have most of the original parts but I'm not 100% sure. The regulator looks like it's missing one of it's springs/coils (I think there should be two?). Additionally, it appears that the motor for the tailgate lock may be broken. I see that BJ's sells the window lifter but I don't think that includes the regulator. I do have some concerns about some electrical elements (ie: power seats, stereo, overhead lights don't work), so I'm not even sure if this sucker would get power if I fixed the tailgate.

Does anyone have any ideas for buying replacement parts or if I can take it somewhere to get fixed? OR, if it's going to be a huge expense, does anyone have any suggestions for leaving the glass out and replacing it with something?

I bought the vehicle mostly as a junker to tow my boat. I believe the engine is sound (will be able to tell for sure once I replace the muffler and can drive it without being poisoned). I don't want to toss a ton of money at the thing right now, maybe someday if it ends up being a quality vehicle.

Since I think I can sell this for more than I bought it for, maybe the best solution is to simply buy one in better condition

Thanks!!

Best option is to start with a volt meter and start checking for power then work your way back to the switches and fuse block. Check fuses first and see if any are blown or removed. The tailgate switch on the left side of instrument panel will need to have power. On the left side of tailgate there is a lever switch that prevents the window from operating if the gate isn't shut. You can bypass it if yours is broken. The regulator that moves the window is solid metal and gear teeth. Either rebuild or replace the motor if it doesn't power up. Test motor by connecting it to the battery with some test leads. Wiring diagrams help, I'll dig some up this weekend if you can't find them online

The Saint of Wagonhood.
Good call on the safety switch. Reminds me of trying to fix my fog lights before it occured to me "TURN THE HEADLIGHTS ON"

Thanks everyone! I was able to find the wiring diagrams so that should help. Also found the pages from Tom's parts manuals for the tailgate and regulator; it looks like I'm definitely missing some parts. Now off to replace the muffler! I appreciate your help!
