T Case swap

So I am thinking about swaping out my qurda trac transfer case to a dana 300 T case. The jeep is a 1979 cherokee cheif and has the qudra trac part time conversion kit and a 360 I am wanting to get rid of the t case and go with a dana 300. What am I going to need to do to get this swap to happen?

A centered rear axle, and either a new shaft in the TH400 and a adapter. Or a 727 tranny with a Jeep bell housing. New front and rear drive shafts or your existing shafts reworked.

Depending on the amount of lift, the front driveshaft on the 727/300 combo can be real close to the transmission pan. ( I know it is on a CJ , not certain on the Chief )

Just thought of something else. I don't know if the flexplate the torque converter bolts to is interchangeable between the TH400 and 727.

No, the TC is not interchangable. One uses three bolts to attach to the torque convertor and one uses four.

I'm debating the same thing. Although a Dana 18 won't require a differential swap. I am really debating this because the Quadra Trac is a commitment. If you want to keep it you have to stick with it or it will cost you.

I will also lose my dual tank set up if I have to use a rear centered diff

It's already a tight fit

So the d18 would be less work to swap in then the 300 and less new parts? Is the 18 going to be as strong as the 300? I am wanting to swap because of the type of wheeling I do. All the people in my club say the qudra Trac is not that good on rocks what do u guys say about that

I wonder how many of your club members have actual experience with a Quadratrac off road? I do, on rocks, hill climbs, and some mud. There is no difference off road than any other transfer case. In fact the reduction in low range is a bit better at 2.72 to 1, vs 2.62 and 2.0 for the Dana 300 and Dana 18 respectively.

The down side of the case is the quality of aftermarket chains, and some parts are unavailable.
Of all the TC's used in Jeeps the Q-trac is the easiest to take off and reinstall.

I've been happy with the one I have behind the 360 in my 7.

Edit, this Jeep has a welded rear, and a lock rite in the front with lockouts. When driven on the road, the E-Drive switch stays engaged, and the front lockouts unlocked.

The offset rear comes up quite a bit on these swaps. The guys with Scouts have been swapping D20 in place of the 18 for years with no adverse effects. Just a thought.

I don't think the guys in my club have much actual experience with the q trac due to the fact that they all have nice shiny newer rigs TJ's, JK,ZJ I think I am the only FSJ in my club.

That's what I thought. There aren't many CJ guys that use them off road either. Off roading is the only thing I do with mine! 99% of the time I'm in it. I wouldn't hesitate to take it to Moab. Except for the factory axles.

so I am thinking that I will stay with the q trac. What steps do I need to take to keep it going strong for many years to come? How hard is it to rebuild the t case. I have rebuilt a t-177 for my cj and that was not to bad at all.

I am thinking the same. Just rigging a manual switch up for 4X4. I am just going to go ahead and replace the chain now. And replace the fluid often.

how would you go about rigging a manual switch to replace the vac switch?

I came across a thread where someone did it. I will rig up a universal carb cable I have laying around.
