Stock Engine Color???

I finally power washed, degreased my 90 Wagon yesterday. My long block is grey painted, not primer. And the grey goes down to metal no blue layers anyplace on the engine block itself. The intake, pan, valve covers are all blue. Was trying to determine if the block had been replaced at some point. My T-Case 229 has a Jasper Transmissions metal tag on it and looks like new. Did not get any history on the truck from the PO.

Engines from this era were black, IIRC.

There were two blues - the metallic blue, and the solid blue-green color ("Makita blue.") The metallic blue ended about 1974 (I'm certain about this). The Makita blue changed to black in the 80s some time. California cars were red through 1972.

Was fairly certain of that as well. Thanks for the confirmation. My block is gray heads, Makita blue as are the valve covers, intake and oil pan. I need to see what numbers are on it. Its sounded like it has a small cam since day one I just attributed it to a poor tune etc. But now I've dailed it all in well, done the carb, dynomax no cat, removed all the air crap and did the tfs upgrade and recurve. Runs strong. Def more than 144hp. Sounds cammed when cold and still rumbles with a light shimmy in the idle.

Update! Block says 5.9 L on the side aka 360. Block and heads are grey for certain no sign of ever being black, rest is blue

The "5.9L" instead of "360" is late, ca 90-91. So you might have the original block.
