Standard tranny swap

I have a 401 with around 380 HP and 450+FT/LBS with a 727 I just had rebuilt behind it.

I want a stick to make best use out of the new engines power. What do y'all recommend in terms of a 4 or 5 speed? My relative has shipping containers full of all kinds of older transmissions. Not many jeep ones though.

What would be the cheapest, strongest tranny to swap? I know I'll need a flexplate, clutch, pedal assembly( and tips?), master cylinder, new drive shafts?, crossmember?

He have any 88+ 700R4's complete? Those can be built pretty mean for an Auto that wont break the bank. Has a lower 1st gear than the 727/TH400 so acceleration will improve plus you gain the .71 OD gear.

He has a bunch of Turbo 350's, 700R4's, a few GM and ford granny 4-speeds, and a little bit of this and that. He even has a few doublers laying around if I wanted to get ridiculous.

If I used a 700R4 would I need to use a lower gear to stay in my power band or should I have enough torque to turn the OD?

I would love to take off hard and have to weld my rear end so I can smoke the rears.

The 700 would need a good build to handle that 401 but if you have 3.31 gears I think the grunt that 401 has wouldnt have any problem holding cruise speeds at 70+ in od. The lower first, and if you rocked a 2200 stall your tires will hate you :-). what size tires are you running? My 31x 10.50s and 3.31 gears im turning 2800 @75 w the 727 with OD and lockup converter it would drop approx 500 which I know my mild cammed 360 would pull fine with. The wagons not as heavy as it looks. <4400 lbs. Suburbans are 2000 lbs heavier run taller gears and tires same Trans and have smaller engines with less low tq at low end than I do. (The 6.0 ls is an exception.)

I'm running 31" but might go to 33"
I had a 700 behind a really hot 350 in my Air Force days. It must have been built for the abuse.

I will see what I can scrounge up. I have the next year to build it up. So I can accumulate the parts and either fab up or make a new adaptor.

But I really want a stick shift. I enjoy driving a standard.
