Delusions of Grandeur aka the D.O.G.
1979 Cherokee Chief.

It has aftermarket locking hubs. Any guesses as to what t-case is in it?

It has a leaking front cover so it might get the cover off of my 401 or maybe I'll spring for a Bulltear unit. Other than that it runs and drives well.

Has a 360 T400 combo. Pretty sure it sits on 44's. The engine has only 20,000 miles on it.

I want to make it into a rat rod. I'd like to accelerate the surface rust then stabilize it and seal it. Maybe a 4" lift for some 33" and 4.10's

I will be looking for another T400 to beef up for the 401. Probably a 2,200 stall converter.

I'll have the heads worked for a high lift cam and rollers. Pop in a big Lunati hydraulic flat tappet or solid lifter cam. Some Bulltear forged plugs good for 9.8:1 and a Performer RPM.

I am getting the 454 ready for my swap in my 85 Wag. So the Cherokee will be my daily driver while I get the 496 stroker kit and other Chevy goodies together.

I was on the verge of selling all of my AMC/Jeep stuff off but I'm keeping it now. Both Jeeps will run 360's until the swaps are ready.

This should be fun.

Do NOT turn it into a ratrod (go ahead and give it a solid rusty look but don't cut it up), that would be silly!!! It's a FSJ 4wd jeep!! Very good for off road, do a lift kit!! It looks solid and pretty must rust free (except surface rust). Do NOT cut up the body, these are getting harder to find that are not rusted to nothing!! Here is my 1982 Cherokee chief, it has a 258 i6 (22 mpg) 727 trans, Dana 44 front, AMC 20 rear, 208 flor **** case, lockouts in front! It's very rusty, there is a hole in the drivers floor, I'm not going to drive it in the winter, I will get a crappy car!! I'm only going to use my jeep to pull my boat, and joy ride in the summer!!

if only gas was cheaper

I wasn't going to chop it THAT BAD. Just drop the roof a few inches if anything. Both Jeeps will be long term projects. Eventually I'd like to tow the Wagoneer with the Cherokee. The Wag is destined to be wheeled and wheeled hard.

I won't want to drive it around daily with a 10" lift and low gears with that 496. It would be terrifying.

The Cherokee will just get a 4" lift and 33"s with the 401 and 4.10's it should pull really well with that set up and look good doing it.

Rat rod it with rhe blanket for front seat. Definitely be bad ***! It'll just make the remaining stock ones worth that much more. If you don't make it your project the weeds will just overtake it and then no one will be able to enjoy it.

Looks solid, great score. I do however see a problem with the windshield visor

360 with a TH400 would be a Quadratrac transfercase. The front locking hubs SHOULD indicate a part-time kit installed or they were put in for towing purposes.

Crap. That won't last long behind the 401. I guess that means I'll have to find something else or swap with my Wag and put a doubler in it

You like that? Lol
I think he said the sunroof is leaking or the roof rack is. Honestly I can't remember. All I heard was "..give you the Cherokee" and everything else garbled out.

I actually planned on the saddle blanket seats for the Wag. I might leave this interior alone. It's too nice. No cracks, no rips, very well maintained. I will be bringing it to my place after we finish getting the Wagoneer going. It's sitting about 50 feet from it waiting on the rebuilt 360.

Rumor has it that Roger Mears used a stock QT when racing at Baja and around California without issues.

Hopefully I'll be picking up some 33" Mickey T's on 16" soft 8's with 4" back spacing. Found a set of 5 wheels and tires for a reasonable price. Then it's just a matter of deciding on what lift I want. I am thinking another Rustys 4" all spring lift but good God almighty their shipping is outrageous. Hurts me all over again.

If anyone has anything input on getting away from the stock back spacing I'm all ears. Also if anyone knows if the 33" will fit a WT without a lift I'd appreciate some input about your experience.

Pulled it out and got it running. Sounds good. Just needed a little starter fluid. It's been sitting about a year. Front cover has a pinhole leak next to the dizzy. Oil pressure sat at around 50. Has an electric and mechanical fuel pumps

Also because of the emblem I believe it is a Super Chief.

Has factory A/C

Also has what appears to be a stock radio/CB combo that surprisingly works.

Not sure how I feel about the quadratrac

image-3138725887.jpg

Also has a dual tank set up. I had no idea they came this way.

Super Chief?

3.54 gears

Picking up a set of 285/75/16 MT's tonight

Those gear should turn those tires down the road nicely with good highway manners.

They didn't come with stock dual tanks. That switch is obviously an add on from a previous owner.

The badge just means that it's the sport model (that's what the S stands for).

Well whoever installed the tanks did a good job. It looks factory and has a one piece skid plate that protects both of them.

actually, one of our jeeps would be cool as a ratrod, but I would do a 4 door, more of them out there and you can have a larger crowd in the car.

good find, keep her as she is or a little higher.
