Smog pump/Air Pump Removal and New Belt Size

I just pulled my Air (smog) pump off my 87 GW. The air pump had the bracket to adjust for belt tension, none of the other pulleys for that belt allow for tension adjustment (they are all fixed parts of the engine). How do I install a new belt? Do I need to get a idler pulley? I'm really anxious to give the rig a test drive with all the air pump system removed. Any guidance is appreciated! Thanks!

the power steering pump moves. I removed smog pump and belt, left one for ps pump and tightened pump. Mines a 90 though. What year is yours?

Mine is a 87. When I looked at the PS pump I didn't see anything that looked to be adjustable. I will recheck it though. Would it be a poor decision if I just removed one of the PS pump's main bolts in order to get belt on and then bolt it back into place? Sorry for the rookie question, I bought this rig for exactly this reason, to learn how to do these sorts of things. I'm pulling the carb to rebuild it and the pulling intake to put in a new gasket this weekend. Thankfully, I will have an older more experienced friend to the carb rebuild with me. Thanks for the suggestion!

Well if its like mine the adjuster bolt will be on the back side of the reservoir right by the line. Loosen that bolt (5/8 or 9/16) then the pump will slide. Yes i also removed the lower pump bolt to get the belt off. Or you can just cut it. and remove the smog pump as it should be driven off the PS pulley using a single short belt. The pump should also have a square 1/2 drive to pull the pump back and put tension on it.

Well, the pic you posted looks just like my layout. So maybe there isn't that much of a difference between the years. I work the rest of today, but have a full 9(!) days off starting tomorrow, so I will post my results soon! Thanks for your help!

From what my all-data shows tlit should be the same. I removed all the air crud, egr, pump, all the cto valves, only vac I have now is dizzy advance and pcv, brakes. I capped the check valves on injection tubes, removed Cat and air line to it. I then rejetted carb using my lm2 wideband to get the mixes nailed. Recurved distributor, built my own hei external controller, msd tfi coil and tfi cap, Accel wires custom lengths. Day and night difference, my engine was redone at some point by previous owner and has some sort of cam, pulls barely 15" of vac

But mileage is now 14.5 vs 7 when I bought it and it moves effortlessly.

I got the belt adjusted. I adjusted the two bolts in the rear of the pump. Ended up using a 54 and 3/4 in belt. I tried to get a pic of the bolts used to se the tension, but it was in a tricky spot.
Also, I managed to plug the headers where air pump had plugged in. I used seven 9/16" bolts, cut down to 1/2 inch length. Also got my spark plugs changed. Also rebuilt my motorcraft 2150 carb. I ran it for a few seconds and wow, what a great improvement. Then.....tons of exhaust under the hood. It seems to be coming the my 9/16 plugs. I used 'regular' washers. I am going to pick up copper washers and try again tomorrow. Should I put something on the threads of the bolts?
Super98, did you ditch the charcoal fuel evap canister? I am tempted to do and use a vented gas cap (legal in my state) and put a brass float on the cab float housing.
Oh, almost forgot. I picked up a section of exhaust pipe so I can delete the cat, I just need to find someone to help with the welding.
Thanks!

Upgrade the ignition system and you'll really see a difference.

Do the tfi swap next u will be glad you did. Im running an msd coil (tfi) Accell 8.8 custom fit wires (did them myself), use the dizzy adapter and tfi large cap. I then for fun built my own external HEI so I could get full voltage to the coil without the resistor wire that duraspark uses. PC heatsink, aliminum square stock and some rubber isoltation mounts. I've read about how to test my coil, doesn't look like it is easy to troubleshoot. The engine is running pretty good now, I'm not sure I need to replace them.

Ok, so I cant figure out how to include multiple 'quotes' in one single response. Anyway, I just posted a pic of what I have for ignition so far. I looked up some info on TFI, it looks like it isn't too complicated to install off the shelf stuff. Any pics of that HEI setup? I think I have most those parts in bins somewhere and might give it a shot. Thanks.
