A series of unfortunate events

so I bought a 1987 grand wagoneer about 2 weeks ago, it's been running great, just have had a few small things like the automatic choke doesn't wanna work when the engine is really cold, so the first start of the day I have had to use started fluid to get it started.

Well last night I was going to take a trip to get some tires for it, I was driving my wagon, well when I got on the highway my engine started smoking, so I pulled off the highway and started looking and it was leaking oil, well I was only a few miles away from home so I started heading there, when I was about a mile from home it just stopped moving, it was something with my transmission, I'm not sure what happened, than i put it in 4 wheel drive and it started going again. But only until i got to my driveway than it would not go all the way up it, so I was wondering what I could look at for now, going to try and drop the transmission this weekend

Did you brake a trans cooler line and leak out all your fluid, maybe?

You lost all your engine oil? Filter still on? Drain plug still in? Check the oil pan to see if its leaking. I fear that if you drove it with no oil you may have permanently damaged your motor.

Definitely check fluids. Is the rear drive shaft still connected?

I didn't have a chance to check any fluids other than my oil, I put oil in my car when I saw it was leaking, I didn't run the engine without oil, I know that much not to do that, my issue is what my car won't move when it is in gear, it rolls backwards in drive but won't go forward, I think it's something with my transfer casor transmission, for the fact that it moved in 4 wheel drive. But it stopped moving after so far. My engine wasn't knocking or anything like that so I didn't kill my engine. Tomorrow morning I'm going out to work on it I will give a more detailed update, but one big question. Would me leaking oil have anything to do with my transmission giving out on me ?

Its strange that it moved in 4x4 when it quit moving in drive. Don't add up.if the transfer case goes it may move in drive but it probably wouldn't pull the front and leave the rear rendered inoperable.

No QT in 87. Should be 229. Both drive shafts connect to the transfer case, there should be a 2" rould tag on the back close to the center with Id#.
