Rob's 79 Cherokee

So, next week I should be picking up a 1979 Cherokee Chief from a local guy for $2,000.

Here's what I know about it.

Titled
registered
street legal

Original 360cid V8
Original TH400
aftermarket headers (Hedman)
Holly truck avenger 670 carb
4 wheel disk brake mod
rebuilt front end
rebuilt front and rear differential- Dana 44, 4.54 gear ratio
rebuilt steering column linkage
t-case swapped for one with gears (dana 20?)
new 35" BF Good rich mud terrain AT's,
aluminum cross-flow radiator with electric cooling fan (from BJ's)
AC and heater have been removed.

The floor board has some baseball sized holes, and there's a fair amount of surface rust, but I couldn't find any rot in the doors or fenders or such, so they seem solid. I think he keeps it in his garage. It's banged up here and there, and the tailgate has some denting and a hole in it (looks almost like it got stabbed with a knife). The electric rear window works, but the felt needs replacing. Previous owner ripped out the AC and heater, and moved the trans linkage to the floor. Has nerf bars welded to the frame and aftermarket exhaust. Has a phantom draw, and he installed a battery kill switch to deal with that, instead of tracing down the culprit. Has a cd player, but the speakers aren't hooked up, so whatever. I don't really care about that. Grill is damaged, but once again, that's just cosmetics.

I dunno what all else to say. there are some holes in the roof from something. I guess a ski rack?

The interior's on it's last leg, but I'm thinking of just monstalining it when I do my TJ in the near future.

So, who wants to congratulate me, and who wants to warn me about what to look out for?

Don't worry, I already spend all my money on my TJ... Even though I don't even have the Cherokee yet, I did locate a serviceable grill out of a 78. I know these grills are different, but can be swapped. Are there any issues swapping the 78 grill into the 79?

Please tell me a 95 Dodge Ram seat will fit in there easily... I used to own a 95 Dodge Ram, and I swear it had the most comfortable seat of any vehicle I've ever driven. Having seats like that in my TJ is something I dream of... So having them in the Cherokee would be awesome.

Cool. I'll have to look around for some seats, then.

So, I picked up the Jeep tonight, and drove it home. Other than starting to overheat, cause I was trying to haul *** in 4lo (the front hubs were unlocked, so I didn't realize), it was a good ride home. After pulling over, and putting it into 2hi, it drove like a champ down the highway.

Some daylight pics, so you can sorta get a feel for it... Bear in mind, it's mechanically sound.

Yeah, the BFGs are less than 6 months old. The guy I bought it from said he had 36" Super Swampers on there, but then the Offroad park near him closed down, so he switched to the BFGs thinking that he'd use it as a beach cruiser.

That Park just closed down earlier this year, so... And the spare is brand new. I just need a rim for it.

I also got a box of new poly bushings with the Jeep. Looks like a body bushing kit, sway bar kit, tie rod kit, and trans mount.

Right now I'm compiling a rough list of stuff to do to it. Most of it's cosmetics, comfort, and rust stuff.

I've already got it insured, and I even went out and got the inspection renewed on it today.

Tomorrow I will hazard the Tax Collector's office to do the title transfer and registration.
