Yeah, that about looks like my dif... only, my vent tube is still intact...

I did have 3 different kinds of bolts in my front dif cover, and I also snapped 1 when trying to put it back on... That was fun!

This is Houston. I've had my TJ up to the door sill in Mud and water, and up to the bottom of the tub in clay.

I shoulda been smart, and pulled the dif covers on the Cherokee ages ago, but I believed the guy when he said he always changed the fluids after offroading. I mean, he'd put so much work into it (new radiator, electric fan, rear disc brakes, rebuilt front linkage), and kept it in his garage, why wouldn't I believe him?

Since my fresh air vent ducts are toast, and I can't seem to convince anyone who's parting out a FSJ to pull some for me, I decided to make some block off plates. I took a PB Blaster can (the big $20 kind), that I had finished off the other day, and cut some block off plates out of it. I'm also gonna use the rest of it to make a radio delete plate for my Cherokee.

Huzzah!

How's that for white trash metal fab?

I also picked up a Rhino grill, pie pans, and Headlights from a member off IFSJA.org. I'm more interested in the Headlights that than rest, but the price was too good to not buy the whole package!

I still wanna make my own custom grill at some point, and add some extra lights to the pie plate location.

Well, if you wanna pass over the rhino grille...I'm sure I could locate someone willing to put it on their rig!

If I ever finish my custom grill, and extra lights, I'll let ya know. Of course, I plan on keeping the headlights.

Over the weekend I decided to add some screening to my cowl. I stole someone's idea off IFSJA, and picked up some plastic rain gutter guards from Home Depot. The only options were brown or white, so I went with the brown ones.

I like it.

Nice. I ought to open mine up, never looked down there, but my floor vents work, so i doubt its too clogged? And I think I already have screen in mine from a PO.

It's definitely worth taking a look. Mine were rusted shut from all the stuff in there. there were several inches of dirt, and several more of leaves in both vents. Surprisingly, it hadn't rusted through the fender well, yet.

About to go out to look at a 78 Cherokee that's for sale for $800 from the original owner. I don't think it runs, but if the sheetmetal's in better condition than mine, it may be worth nabbing for parts.

Agreed to buy the 78 Cherokee for $500. Sheet metal's only good for cutting patches out (which I plan on doing), but everything's there, and the guy said it was gonna go to the scrap yard next week, if he couldn't sell it. I figure I can salvage several parts for myself, and part out the rest, at least... Maybe I'll break even... Maybe...

Just saw this build. Keep at it. Cherokee Chiefs are soo awesome. FSJs are the shiznit. Itll all come together dont worry. Then once you get everything patched up paint it the color you like and bedline the interior.

That's the plan. I already have the bedliner for the inside, and a pretty good idea on how I want to paint it. I'm thinking something along the lines of battleship gray with black accents. Haven't decided if I wanna keep the shiny bits, though...

Can I get a mod to rename this thread "Rob's 79 Cherokee" so it more accurately reflects the fact that this is sort of a build/maintain thread for my Cherokee? I'm feeling OCD about the title atm...

Since I'm getting the 78 Cherokee today, I had to make space in the driveway. That required moving my 79 Cherokee, which currently has the interior gutted. Instead of trying to move it by hand (I can push it, but I can't turn those 35s), I decided to start it up, and drive it. BUT! Instead of putting the interior wiring harness back in, I cut some jumper wires for the engine harness, and hot wired the Jeep. It was great to drive it with no gauges or lights or any visible wires in the cab!

Don't worry, I only backed it up to the sidewalk. Right before I leave to get the other Cherokee, I'll move it to the curb, so I can "hopefully'' back the 78 off the trailer, and straight into the driveway.
