Pre Grand Wagoneer vs Pre XJ Cherokee

Pre Grand Wagoneer vs Pre XJ Cherokee, what are the difference between these to full size jeeps? I've did a few google searches, did a wiki search, and searched this forum but I can't find any real differences.

If I had money and space I would love to buy an old Cherokee Chief or Wagoneer. There is one for sale in my home town for $600 with a blown trans and surface rust. You know your a nerd when you drool over stuff like that. The things I would do to her....

actually technically/mechanically not much difference - Cherokees were cheaper models than Wagoneers, 2door bodies were only Cherokees.

Yes, there were. They were just Wagoneers with less options.

Cherokees were available with wider axles. Any Cherokee Chief will have them. The giveaway is the presence of metal fender flares.

Like so:

I'd watch out getting a FSJ. It's VERY addicted and we now own 3 Jeeps. Well, technically one's a Kaiser/Jeep, but it's a slippery slope.

Very cool guys, thanks for all the help! I should shoot for a 2-door Cherokee Chief then. What years are best? Anything change through out them. This project wouldn't happen for a few years but when it does, its diesel time! The engine will be sold off and the trans will get a gear vendors addition with out a doubt.

I can see the addiction to grow already...
