Why waste money on the other one? And it probably isn't the head but we shall see. I'm hoping it is for his sake.

But would I be a bad person if deep down I wanted to see him build this motor up with high compression pistons bored .30 over, a lumpy cam, and the usual bolt on suspects?

Guides have to be machined out and press fit back in, cant change them without pulling the heads. At.that point you should look at a full valvejob. As mentioned a while back ill be shocked if its valvetrain. Some high rpm race only motors wouldnt run valve seals at all to help lube the guides and it wont puke liquid oil. Smoke a tad until warms up for certain. I use bronze guides on my builds.

That's the way I remember it, but..... Hey.
If its seeping oil from the exhaust port, best odds are ring failure. There would have ro be a massive passage for that amount of oil through the head.
I do agree with compression check, do one round dry, do one round with a couple of caps full of oil in each cylinder, record all eight both ways.

Correct, all plugs removed, wide open throttle, three to five compression strokes (whichever you decide, same for all cylinders). I have heard good arguments for both counts, so I'm rather indifferent to the count so long as its consistent.

Ok, compression test good. Spark plug wasn't fouled at all, so I think my rings are ok. Replaced valve seals "pain in the ***" started it up, and no oil! Woo hoo! So until the next time something goes wrong, which will probably be sometime this week, thanks everyone!

Next is an oil change, some tranny fluid, bolt the headers back up, and get new dual exhaust put on. Oh, and start saving money for the next bunch of things that pop up!

How will you be running your duals?

Would love to do some kind of side pipes, but will probably run them straight back. Crossing drivers side in front of transfer, meeting up with the other side. Might run a crosspipe to join the two. Heard it is supposed to even out horsepower. Any suggestions are always welcome!

People have had luck with crossing the D/S after the transfer case. Then out the back. You could cross them between the oil pan and tranny.

I posted pictures and a video of my 2.5" dual setup last night. It comes from the stock manifolds, through the front leafs, and tucked up nice and high. You can only see the tip barely peeking out that dumps at a 45* in front of the rear wheel. It uses knock-off Flowmaster 40's. sounds good. Great power. And no drone whatsoever. It doesn't have a crossover. I wanted true duels.

The title is AMC 401 exhaust video.
