Mystery Part

Need some help-- there is a part that is located just under the power steering pump that has a pulley. It is making a loud chattering sound and I am guessing is failing but I don't know what it is. It's connected to a hose that has a breather on it s I thought it was a pump of some kind.
This is a 78 j
Cherokee Chief. It is not an AC pump.

It's part of your A.I.R. system. The pump goes bad. Not too expensive to replace.
It forces air into the exhaust manifold. This helps with unburnt fuel. (simple explaination). It's not a bad system and it does some good with no real power loss. It was eventually obsoleted with fuel injection. (But not on OUR rigs...)

I know were supposed to have it on etc.. but i removed all of it on my 90. I rebuilt the carb, did the MSD TFI update and tuned with my LM2 wideband to get good fuel trims. I did do this in stages and can tell you that air pump (mine was new as well) draws some power off the engine, it was smoother, quieter, revved easier and overall my mods/tuning brought me up to 13 city with 31x10.50's and 3.31 gearing. Not a fan of that AIR system. the newer cars that have it (my BMW did) use an electric blower for it now vs the belt drive, so the loss in power isnt 100% but only when the system is active.

I guess the only concern I would have then, since I'm in California, is will it pass smog? Do you think there eWorld be an issue?
