My new old '78 J10 Honcho

Bought this 1978 J10 last fall from a family friend who was the original owner. He saw it on the transport truck and bought it before it even hit the dealership's parking lot! :2thumbsup: It's all original. Has 80k miles, 360, 4bl carb, 4sp m/t, 3.54 gears, no quadratrac, reg t/c.

Super cool! You seem pretty stoked, you're gonna be a very happy and sometimes upset jeep owner. :)

Thanks! Yep the "sometimes upset Jeep owner" has already happened, more on that later though

The oil pressure gauge in the dash read 5 or less all the time, so I thought it might need a new oil pump, so I ordered a rebuild kit. Turns out I didn't need it (not yet anyway, I'll keep it for down the road :)) we hooked up a mechanical pressure gauge and the oil pressure is just fine, 50 when started and a little lower when warmed up . Installed a new oil pressure sending unit, and tada, gauge in dash reads just fine!

Oil pump leaks, will keep the rebuild kit for future use.

Coolant reservoir had a big crack in the bottom, so I replaced it with this. Oooo purdy!

It has some rust issues, like on the front valance, bedsides, inner bed wheelwells, and front flares, but I'm not too worried about that for now. Want to get it running reliably if that's possible  before I start on the cosmetics.

Rust

I know the front valance is hard to come by, but I got a tip that there was a J truck at the local pic a part, so for $50 I pulled this, a rust free valance! The right side is a little buggered up, but I think I can straighten it out a little bit.

Then it sat all winter there, til I took a vacation a few weeks ago to do some fishing, camping and wrenching on the truck.

Over the winter I collected a mass of parts I knew I need, fuel tank, filter, lines, sending unit, filler & vent hoses, radiator hoses & heater hoses, t/stat & housing, coolant sending unit, all filters and fluids. I also ordered some more parts while there on vacation, but they didn't arrive in time, smog pump & belt, air injection tubes & check valves. Will have to do all that later.

When we unloaded the truck off the tow rig, there was a pretty good fuel leak from around the tank area, so I just figured I'd replace everything. The tank had been replaced before due to someone drilling a hole in it and stealing the gas.

Fun laying in the dirt by yourself in the wind and rain under a half full tank of gas (couldn't siphon it all, ran out of containers). I used some wood blocks to hold the tank while I disconnected the hoses/wires.

Why were those pieces of wood up there? I will find out later. :hahaha:
