how does the tank selector work?

I have a 1975 Cherokee Chief, it has two tanks, there is a little lever which I assume is a tank selector on the right hand side on the floor of the drivers seat. I don't have a manual or anything, which is the front tanks, rear tank or what?

you'll have to crawl underneath and check the hoses as to how the valve is plumbed.
