I am about to learn how to port and do a valve job myself. I am excited to learn about this stuff
I've read much of the same about the "cheap" headers. Lousy transitions, complete replacement of the flange. Get the Thorleys! They will match the dog leg.

My best friend owns underground racing in Charlotte NC, 1800 rwhp all wheel drive Lamborghinis, Ferarris, some Vipers. Insane acceleration cars that drive like stock on the street until you open the throttles a little more.... Then its like a Saturn rocket engaged and wel..... first time I launched one I started to lose consciousness by third gear. These things will run 6.80's in the quarter! All wheel drive. hmmmn wagons all wheel. Rofl

One thing makes just no sense to me this current setup is it pops back up the and runs like complete crap unless my base timing is 20+deg!! Perhaps ill degree the old cam before I pull it this makes no sense. 38deg advance mechanical total. It would explain the bad vaccum signal yet not sounding cammed, or timing set off a tooth. Someone playing backyard engineer decided to adjust cam timing by skipping teeth and a sun dial vs adjustable.timing set and degree wheel???? :-)

There is no way this thing should run 180 out. I'm guessing either the previous rebuilder did something really awkward with the cam timing and or this timing chain is stretched out a few feet rofl.

Me too. Have you used the intake rubber gaskets before? They are best used for higher rising intakes. AMC guys warn us to stick with the valley pan. Just sayin..

Correct, valley pan only. The fiber gaskets will make it very difficult to get the bolts in, also causing massive gaps at the end seals. Use only RTV at the end seals, no rubber.

Sounds the same as the olds motors. Ive never used the rubber ends only.rtv. My intake does not have egr or heat passages. What purpose is the valley pan? Stock or heat passage intake I know it keeps oil from coking to the bottom side of the intake and likely helps keep the oil cooler vs it hitting that hot exhaust crossover.

It helps prevent oil coking, but doesn't stop it completely.

It also keep hot oil from splashing up, heating the incoming air, thus reducing overall efficiency.

On a normal intake yes, air gap no. air gap has a built in valley pan if you will. The plenum, runners, etc have an open air gap between them and the bottom of the intake. Ill snap a picture in a bit.

Shucks. For some reason I thought you were running a performer! Sorry bud.

And your right. I've even heard running a Performer RPM doesn't require one.
