got a '71 jeepster commando, now what?

so, on a whim i was searching craigslist for jeeps, killing time at work cause there wasnt much to do, and i come across a recent add (less than an hour old) for a "jeepster commando". having never heard of this i went ahead and took a look and automatically fell in love with the half jeep/half internation scout looking thing i saw. i texted the guy and he said that he had 4 or 5 pppl wanting to come see if that night, and it was first come first serve. i ended up calling a buddy to cover my shift and i rushed out the look at it. someone had seen and driven it right before i got there and said he needed to talk to his wife before buying it, luckily i brought my wife with me. after a test drive i decided it was totally worth the price and we bought it. that was 3 days ago and we finally got out to pick it up today. the tires were dry rotted so i had to find a new used set of tires for it before we could drive it home. so it drove all the way home no problem! i thought for sure it would brake down on the way but sure enough, it ran great and tracks straight and everything.

first things first, we fixed the tail light. seems the previous owner put some sort of trailer type lights as tail/brake light in place of the oem ones. got those fixed. took me a while to figure on the brake light switch was a pressure activated switch on the master cylinder, as apposed to a switch on the brake pedal itself. new ground and bulbs fixed it up just fine!

now i am just looking for advice one what to do with it. we are gonna drive the crap out of it as is. its me and my wifes first jeep. its the first ca rmy wife WANTED me to buy. its the first car that will be in both of our names too. this winter its gonna get some stuff done to it: soa lift, power disk brake conversion, rust repair.

any one jeepster commando owners here? i am wondering what these things are really worth. i picked this one up for 1900 bucks. in an area where you cant find an old cj, in any sort of decent running conditon for less that 3k. plus i had to pay 300 for a set of used goodyear tires (mounting and balancing included). think i lucked out find a used set of matching used tires in the size i need, 15 inch tires are hard to find used, here in clarksville tn anyways.

next week we are gonna wire up a radio, do an oil change, and take the top off. then i be working on sanding, repairing, and repainting the top in my free time.

anyways, i like joining forums for anything new i try,and i guess now i am am trying to be a jeep guy. looking forward to the summer in this thing really. them looking forward to tearing into here this winter.

That is an eye catching Jeep
I don't know much about the Commando, but I'll offer up what I would do with any old vehicle purchase.
Change all fluid! Differentials, transfer case, trans, oil, coolant, brake fluid. All!
What type of running gear: which t-case, rear and front axle, engine. Try to find a service manual (not Haynes or Chilton)
Just as you have, start working the bugs out.
I would try to find a "Commando" specific forum. Not to say your not welcomed, but we may not be the most informative on your model

ya complete fluid flushes are in order. there are two manuals in the back seat of the jeep that i have not taken a look at. not sure if they are for the jeep or just something the guy left in the back. none of the guages work other than the speedo, which doesnt really "work". so i am gonna start rewiring everything and probably wire in new gauges. planning on making a new guage cluster to replace the oem one and replace the speedo with a tachometer. i have searched the net adn surprisingly cannot find a commando specific forum, which i feel like it is not possible that there is not one out there. anybody know of one?

This used to be the "go to" forum for Jeepsters/Commandos: http://forums.off-road.com/jeepster-...jeepster-club/

Looks like it has about as much activity as the earlyCJ5 forum for Jeepsters.

aw man I LOVE those!!!!! dude, I would give my cherokee, and this stroker engine I have just to have something like that stock. Go to the jeepster web site http://jeepstercommandoclub.com/ Tons of good info and those baby's, with a little lift, little larger tires, updated ignition, and some interior mods, are GREAT!! even the ugly 70's jeepsters

Wheel it!

Protect the rockers first - they have big bulls eyes painted on them for the rocks on the trails. You don't need a lot of extra stuff to start ... it's already very competent in its current state.

Automatic or manual?

I think the ECJ5 Jeepster forum gets a lot of overlap from the CJ guys there (more eyeballs even though a minimal number of posts). Most of the Jeepster Commando is shared with the CJs of the same vintage, so there is a lot of expertise on tap there.

Interesting tailgate repair.

Cool find ,I had a 69,yrs ago loved it still what one..does it have the stock v-6 great little motor a little different to tune-up but not bad .also get a service manual if you can and maybe a couple ballast resistors and put in glove box in case. if it has one..and the gas gauge never seem to work

Join the JCCA Forum

Hello: Nice find. I have a '69 and a '70.

You have the best of all worlds - the '71 has 2" springs, and you have Saginaw steering.

You have Buick 225 mated to either a T14 3-speed, or a TH400 auto.

Transfer case is a D20.

Your weak points are the electrical system, heating, and the D27 front axle.

You need to join the Jeepster Commando Club of America (JCCA) forum. You will find over 450 members who will know any and all mods/upgrades and and answers to your questions.

Here's what you will need to understand: Jeepster folks are passionate, but you will almost not be able to find ANYTHING aftermarket "bolt-on." You will have to learn fabrication skills...
