Front End Noise

Jeep Model: 86' Wagoneer 2.5L I4

Problem: When I engage 4L or 4H, the front end makes a terrible sound when the vehicle is in motion.

The sound is similar to a very tight winch cable jumping on the drum. A 'snap 'snap, like a bike chain jumping gears under high load. The jeep itself is very noisy, so it's hard to pinpoint the sound. I suspected the T-case to be the problem, but the manual says it woudl be the front diff, or axle (front diff is where it sounds like the problem is).

I took off the diff cover to inspect any wear/problems. The oil was clean, green and contained no filings or signs of wear. I spun the front DS and watched for any missing teeth or obvious problems. Defeated, I replaced the gasket/fluids and don't know what else to do. Any suggestions?

Here are some links to pictures I took of the front Diff.

Oh, and if someone can tell me what Tcase I have. I believe it to be an NP231, but I'm unsure. My front driveshaft connects to the Tcase with a CV joint, not a Ujoint. Any ideas? I'll post an image of it aswell.

I would check the U-joints in the front drive shaft sence it only does it when its in 4x4 also check out by the front hubs for the noise.
