engine trouble

I have a 1975 j-20 pickup with the 401 amc motor. What could be(all) the causes of excessive blow-by from the oil filler tube? The smoke is extremely oily, and leaves the bottom of the air filter housing wet with oil. The thing does not smoke from the exhaust. Someone has taken most of the emmisions control stuff off, and the vehicle has been hot wired to bypass a broken ignition switch. Engine performance is rough and poor. Vehicle does not run hot. I have to tweek the choke...which i changed over to manual...just to get the thing to run. I have not taken a compression test...could these symtoms indicate a lown head gasket or cracked head? Also the fuel tank on this truck has 2 lines...one fuel one vent or return. Absent the charcoal canister, how in the world do I get fuel out of the tank if I am to bypass the emmisions junk? I can blow in the line and hear fuel...bbut even with an electric fuel pump it won't come out. What am I missing?

you have worn rings. I have the same problem with my 88 comanche. high mileage engines will tend to do that. As a stop gap measure until I get the chance to do a rebuild, I have routed the one end into a pop bottle and have switched to a heavier weight oil (20W50) which seems to have helped.
