My clearcoat is coming off, and its badly faded. Can I get a decent looking finish by sanding through the existing clearcoat and have only clear re painted. The paint beneath looks decent.

You really think you can get through the clear without hitting the metallic? Transtar Motor City Clear is fairly inexpensive and works well. I shoot it with my Anest IWATA gun and 1.3 fluid cap. I have been painting for years but also shot it with low dollar guns and had decent results. Bonds and holds up in the Texas sun pretty well too. One of my oldest repair jobs is still running around here on an F150 that I did 5 years ago and looks like the day it left.
