88 Grand Waggy

I friend of mine is thinking of purchasing an 88 Grand Wagoneer. I was wondering what drive trains they usually came with in 1988.

Engine? Transfer case? front axles? rear axle? transmission models? (auto or manual) Power steering? power assist brakes?
Gauges? clock? locking hubs? vacuum actuated hubs? etc....

The book says 360eng,44'sfrt/rear,auto(727)t-case wasPT-np208,np228,np242,ft-np219 all opt. except np208that was std. ratios-3.07,3.31,3.54,3.73.With long list of options.production#'s16,025 built

engine: AMC 360, 2-bbl car, 8.25:1 compression ratio
transmission: Chrylser TF727
t-case: NP229, 2.6:1 low range
front axle: open knuckle D44 w/ disc brakes
rear axle: d44 w/ drum brakes
Standard gear ratio was 2.73:1, 3:31:1 optional
Power Steering: variable ration power assist 16:1 to 13:1, turning diameter 37.7 feet


88s had fuel, temp, speedo, oil pressure, voltmeter, and a clock in the guage cluster

hubs have drive flanges, 2wd operation comes from a 2-peice passanger side inner axle w/ vacumn disconnect.

You guys know your Waggy stuff. Thanks again. This Waggy has about 80K miles on it, good compression, and has been well cared for. Asking price is $3500. You guys think it's a fair deal?

for that price it sounds like there might be something wrong with it.

check for rust on the frame by the gas tank and make sure the 4wd works. also test out the windows, especially the tailgate window, and the power door locks. those are usually the problem areas.

That's pretty spendy out here in washington don't know prices on jeeps there though.

Sold my '89 back in the fall of 2002 and got $4000 for it. I was original owner and it had 80,000 original miles on it. It was in real good shape too. Don't know if this helps you at all. Oh yeah, that was in NH.
