86 wagoneer 4 wheel drive. Need help!

I inherited an 86 wagoneer LE from my uncle. Not in bad condition but I couldn't get the thing into 4wheel drive. Did some research and trouble shooting and found out that the "vacuum motor " on the transfer case (np 228) was shot. I want to eleminate the vacuum motor all together. Has anyone ever done a mechanical push/pull type cable for this? It looks like it is very possible and would be more reliable. Something like the posi lock looks like it would work well except I would need a different end and they dont make one. I can't see paying 200 bucks another motor that sucks and is prone to failure anyway. Any and all help it would be great. Thanks
